About the Wine

Château Haut-Bailly is a classified Grand Cru Classé de Graves located in the Pessac Léognan appellation, this Château it’s also known for producing one of the world’s most elegant wines.

Haut-Bailly dates back to 1461, where ancient archives prove that from as early as this year, these lands were already recognized as excellent for the cultivation of vines. However, it was until 1530 that the Château started to gain its well-deserved recognition. This was thanks to the Goyanèche and Daitze families, which were responsible of unify the best vineyard plots to produce the very first premium wine.

Today, this spectacular Château is the property of American M&T Bank’s CEO, Robert G. Wilmers. Robert describes this Château to be more than a financial investment, but a true passion. He and his team are completely committed to the continuous improvement of the Château. “In life and in wine, it is remarkable how far the application of good sense and science applied by good people can take you,” Robert says.

Gabriel Vialard has been Haut-Bailly’s winemaker for more than 20 years. He is a respected winemaker with a long trajectory in Bordeaux and has experience in different Châteaux like Smith Haut Lafitte and Chateau Cambon La Pelouse. Gabriel drives progressive change through experimentation while perpetuating the traditional values of the estate.

2016 was en epic year for the Left Bank in Bordeaux. Vinous Media awarded this year with a 98 point review and said, "The 2016s are absolutely remarkable wines. The word that comes to mind, unfortunately so often overused, is balance. The best 2016s are absolutely harmonious, with the tannins barely perceptible at all. The 2016s also have tremendous energy and bright, acid-driven profiles, with many wines playing more in the red-fruit area of the flavor spectrum."

Critic Review

As to the second wine of Château Haut Bailly, it too is fabulous stuff in 2016. A blend of 47% each of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance Cabernet Franc, the 2016 La Parde Haut Bailly offers notable purity as well as medium to full-bodied notes of blackcurrants, dried herbs, flowers, and spice. It’s a layered, seamless wine from this estate that has no hard edges, beautiful balance, and a great finish. It’s already delivering loads of pleasure but will keep for 15+ years. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

This second wine of Château Haut-Bailly offers a softer reflection of the power of the top wine. Generous tannins are already integrating with the rich fruits that come through strongly. The juicy blackberry character to this wine shows concentration. Drink from 2024. Roger Voss ~94 Wine Enthusiast

The medium garnet-purple colored 2016 La Parde de Haut-Bailly comes bursting out of the glass with cassis, redcurrant jelly, fragrant earth and dried Provence herbs scents plus a waft of lavender. Medium to full-bodied, firm, grainy textured and packed with fruit, it delivers a long and mineral-laced finish. ~91 Wine Advocate

The 2016 La Parde de Haut-Bailly, matured in 30% new oak, has a strict, pencil-lead-infused bouquet that demands a little coaxing from the glass. I appreciate the delineation of this second wine, which is quite focused, with a light marine aroma. The medium-bodied palate exerts gentle grip. Finely structured with just a touch of cracked black pepper, this builds in the mouth to quite a linear, grippy finish that suggests that it will last longer than many might afford it. Excellent. ~91 Vinous Media

A firm and velvety red with berry and tobacco character and hints of walnuts. Medium body, round and juicy tannins and a medium finish. A blend of 47 per cent merlot, 47 per cent cabernet sauvignon and six per cent cabernet franc. Second wine of Château Haut-Bailly. Try after 2021. ~91 James Suckling
