About The Wine

Welcome to Taylors Wines, where the journey from humble beginnings to global recognition is not just history—it’s a legacy in the making. In 1969, the Taylor family planted their roots in the heart of South Australia's Clare Valley, a region so ideal for winemaking that it practically whispered “this is where greatness begins.” Here, alongside the Wakefield River, they discovered the terroir that would set their empire in motion—a magical blend of Terra Rossa soil (red loam over limestone) and the valley’s dramatic climate, which delivers perfect ripening days paired with cool, crisp nights to rejuvenate the vines.

This site wasn’t just a vineyard—it was a goldmine of potential. With a visionary dream and a relentless drive, Taylors Wines quickly became the largest vineyard holding in the Clare Valley, securing their place as Australia’s 13th largest wine company by revenue. The 1973 release of their first Cabernet Sauvignon marked the beginning of something extraordinary. Fast-forward to today, and Taylors is a founding member of Australia's First Families of Wine, an exclusive group representing the best of Australian winemaking heritage, constantly pushing boundaries and redefining what Australian wine means.

While the company operates under the Wakefield Wines name in the Northern Hemisphere (due to trademark considerations), their heart—and their premium wines—remain rooted in the Clare Valley. From their flagship The Pioneer Shiraz, crafted from the estate's most prized parcels, to their cutting-edge environmental practices driving water conservation and eco-smart packaging, Taylors Wines is a force to be reckoned with.

This is the winery that changed the game—forever fearless, always forward-thinking, and dedicated to sustainability and innovation. Their wines don’t just stand out; they command attention. Whether it's their Cabernet Sauvignon, a benchmark for quality and structure, or the stunning Pioneer Shiraz, a wine that’s as bold and unforgettable as the visionary behind it, Taylors continues to set the bar for exceptional Australian wines that are worthy of global acclaim.

Taylors Wines has been highly awarded at global wine shows, continually earning critical acclaim from the world's best wine critics. In fact, they were named The Most Awarded Winery in the World in 2017, a reflection of their unwavering dedication to excellence. Year after year, Taylors remains the gold standard, and their wines only improve with time.

If you’re looking for something that’s more than just wine—something with a story, with history, with passion—then you’ve found it. Taylors Wines isn’t just a bottle on your shelf. It’s a part of Australian winemaking history, a slice of craftsmanship, and a symbol of bold innovation.

The St. Andrews range of wines is named after a historic property in the Clare Valley, first established in 1892 by Scottish immigrants. For years, St. Andrews was one of the leading producers in the area but ceased operating in the 1930s. Recognizing the potential of this land, which lay adjacent Wakefield’s first vineyards, founder Bill Taylor purchased the property in 1995 and replanted, releasing the first vintage in 1999. These critically acclaimed wines are only made in exceptional vintages and from top estate parcels.

Aging: 18 months in French oak barrels (40% new, 60% 2 – 3 year old)

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The bright, vivid, aromatic ripe fruit on the nose is fresh and pure. The palate is sweet and rich, polished and ripe, with clusters of blue and dark red berries, hints of apricot and a hit of delicate cedar wood, mocha and vanilla. A wine which will age well. ~95 Decanter

A very attractive bouquet of complexity, variety and time. Aromas of fresh blackberries and dark skinned plums, layers of barrels spices and a gentle minty and eucalypt quality. (Truth is, I was expecting some eucalypt so I may be amplifying its presence more than is there). Purple flowers and black currant suggestions round out the bouquet. Delicious on the palate, true to the power and elegance a Cabernet should show without overstating any single attribute. The wine is taut and youthful with firm tannins and plenty of acidity. A great foundation for the fruit and ageing. Some roasted nut and toasty barrel spice qualities, fresh red fruits core and excellent structure. A lengthy and complex finish suggesting best drinking from 2029 through 2039+. ~95 Cameron Douglas MS

Indigo color. Aromas and flavors of dark cherry fudge, toffee, and black tea with a full body and a long finish revealing overtones of cooked cherries, plum, and mocha with grippy tannins and moderate oak flavor. Powerful and brooding fruits balance with oak and structure; this is a wine that will drink better and better with time. ~94 Tastings.com

~94 The Wine Front

Dark colour tinged with purple-blue. Delicate, complex nose offering up a fusion of black fruits and a mineral, smoky tone. Racy structure on the palate with ripe, very well-integrated tannins and an aromatic spectrum that lingers on and on. A stellar wine. ~93 Gilbert & Gaillard

This has intense and rich red plums and redcurrants, as well as assertively spicy oak, all married in a classic-styled red with plenty of richness on offer. Bold and juicy. Drink or hold. Screw cap. ~92 James Suckling

Luscious black cherry, mocha, dried mint and a toasted coconut oak nuance are starting to show a touch of bottle age. There's lovely freshness on the palate and tangy fruit, with olive-y savoriness. It's framed in tightly wound tannins. will age well. ~95 Decanter Drink until 2034. ~91 Wine Enthusiast

Juicy notes of toasted fennel, cardamom and clove complement the kirsch, raspberry and plum flavors. Bittersweet chocolate and espresso details are generous and linger on the long finish. Drink now. 1,824 cases made, 100 cases imported. ~90 Wine Spectator
