About The Wine

This is a vintage Champagne with a story you won't find anywhere else: it was created exclusively for the American market, in tribute to the 250th anniversary of U.S. Independence.

Billecart-Salmon chose the 2018 vintage for it — and not by accident. 2018 was the House's 200th harvest. Billecart was founded in 1818. The United States was founded in 1776. This bottle stitches both birthdays together. The story goes back further than that: Charles Billecart, the second-generation "Intrepid Adventurer" of the family, was the first to chase the American market across the Atlantic in the 1800s. Two centuries later, his descendants made this for the country he believed in first.

The wine itself is a Vintage Champagne in the strictest sense — 65% Pinot Noir from Premier and Grand Cru parcels in the Montagne de Reims, 35% Chardonnay from the Grand Crus of the Côte des Blancs, 100% Grand or Premier Cru with no exceptions. Vinified almost entirely in stainless steel (just 3% in oak, for texture rather than flavor), rested on the lees for 63 months before disgorgement, finished at a precise 4.9 g/l of dosage. That's Extra Brut territory — dry enough to let the fruit and the chalk do the talking with no sugar in the way.

The 2018 vintage is one of the great modern years in Champagne. Decanter called it "truly exceptional." Wine-Searcher rates it "Legendary." Tasters group it with 1996, 2002, and 2008 — and the Pinot Noir was the standout grape of the year, ripening with phenolic depth and precision after a hot, dry summer cushioned by deep winter water reserves. That's exactly the foundation a Pinot-dominant Billecart vintage needs to do its best work.

The result is a Champagne with the structure to live a decade or more in bottle (longer in magnum), but the openness to drink beautifully right now. Once the U.S. allocation is gone, it won't be made again.

65% Pinot Noir (Montagne de Reims, Premier & Grand Cru), 35% Chardonnay (Grand Cru, Côte des Blancs). Extra Brut, 4.9 g/l. 63 months on the lees. 3% oak vinification.

Pours a pale gold with bright, luminous highlights and a fine, lively bead.

The nose opens on stone fruits — nectarine and mirabelle plum — over blueberry, white and violet flowers, and a chalky lift, with elegant notes of anise-spiced Alsatian biscuit pulled from the long lees aging.

The palate enters creamy, supported by refined brioche, then accelerates into an energetic mid-palate of poached pear, white flowers, and tight chalky minerality. The finish is persistent and sapid, threading almond, peach, and chalk through a finely chiseled structure.
