About the Wine

'Vigneto Bucerchiale' Chianti Rufina Riserva is Selvapiana’s flagship wine. This is a superb wine, that's not only loved by us, but also by some of the most important wine critics and magazines in the world, granting it several 90+ ratings and honorable mentions. Forbes featured the 2018 vintage in their article called “Italian Wine Gems That Should Be Better Known.” While James Suckling called it a "Very pure and beautiful red," in its 94-point review.

Selvapiana dates back to medieval times. It was one of the most important vigilance towers, which sole purpose was to protect the city of Florence from any invader. It was until 1827, thanks to Michele Giuntini, that this magical place transformed into the Tenuta that we know to date.

This family-owned winery is now led by the 5th generation of the Giuntini family, Francesco. He was one of the first Tuscan winemakers to produce Chianti Riserva with only Sangiovese grapes. Since the first day that Francesco took over the Tenuta, he started to raise the bar, and significantly increase the quality of the estate. He brought to the winemaking team (as a consultant) the one and only Franco Bernabei, one of the most important winemakers in the country.

The estate comprises more than 600 acres, of which 143 are planted with vines. The vineyards, -that are organically certified,- are located in some of the best Tuscan terroirs, in the municipalities of Rufina, Pontassieve y Pelago.

Chianti Rufina is one of the smallest DOCG sub-zones in Chianti. Decanter called it “The most famous of the Chianti sub-zones.” Chianti Rufina’s beauty relies on the outstanding terroir where it is located. This region is renowned for its high-altitude vineyards that are placed at the foot of the Apennine Mountains. The proximity to the mountains provides this region with an outstanding climate, that delivers elegant and balanced wines with fresh acidity.

Aging: 18 months French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes100% Sangiovese.

Reviews

A very pure and beautiful red with cherry and strawberry. Subtle spice, such as nutmeg and cedar. Orange peel, too. Medium to full body. Firm, silky tannins melt nicely into the wine. Fresh and clean finish. A little tight at the end. A beautiful single-vineyard Chianti Rufina with structure. Drinkable now, but better after 2023, when it will have softened a little. ~94 James Suckling.

Essential and decidedly clear in the main profile alternating notes of cherries, camphor, orange blossom, crumbled stone, rose petals, grapefruit, and guarana. Medium body, fine-grained round tannins, and a decidedly pleasant fruity aftertaste finish. Drink now. ~92 WinesCritic.com

Savory, balsamic aromas and flavors of wild herbs and Tuscan scrub are a nice foil for the ripe cherry and macerated plum fruit in this expressive red, which is balanced and lively on the long finish. Drink now through 2028. ~91 Wine Spectator.
