About The Wine

This is the wine Screaming Eagle makes when they want to do something different.

Same Oakville estate as the flagship Cabernet, same Nick Gislason winemaking, same David Abreu farming — but where the flagship leans Cabernet Sauvignon and brooding power,

The Flight leans Merlot and aromatic finesse. The 2019 is a 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc Bordeaux blend, and at every step of the process it's treated with the same attention as wine that sells for three to four times the price.

The wine was originally called Second Flight — a name the estate dropped in 2015 because it implied a step-down product, which this isn't. The Flight comes from the same vineyard parcels as the flagship; it's grown on iron-rich soils within the same Oakville site that produces America's most expensive Cabernet, and it's aged in 65% new French oak barrels for nearly two years. The difference isn't quality. It's identity. Merlot leads, the wine drinks more aromatically, and the personality is unmistakably distinct from the flagship.

The 2019 vintage in Napa was defined by low yields and small berries — naturally concentrated fruit that gave winemakers extraordinary depth to work with. Antonio Galloni at Vinous called this 2019 "dark, powerful and brooding... almost shockingly so." James Suckling awarded 99 points and singled out the floral, violet-and-lavender aromatics. The drinking window stretches from 2027 well into the 2040s. This is the estate's other wine — and on many palates, on many nights, it's the one people reach for first.

65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc. Aged ~2 years in 65% new French oak.

The 2019 opens with an extraordinary floral lift — violet, lavender, and rose petal — over a deep core of black cherry, plum, and blue/purple fruit, threaded with graphite, black olive, and a hint of Asian spice.

The palate is medium-to-full-bodied with the natural concentration of a low-yield, small-berry vintage; tannins are firm but very fine-grained, running the full length of the wine without ever turning grippy.

A lifted herbal note emerges on the back end — spearmint, green tea, green olive — adding nervy contrast to the dark fruit.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Extremely floral and aromatic with violets and lavender throughout. Black olives, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, very fine-grained tannins that run the length of the wine. Goes on for minutes. A greenish undertone comes out at the end with some spearmint, green tea and green olive. About two-thirds merlot. Best after 2028, but already stunning. ~99 James Suckling

The 2019 The Flight, the estate's Merlot based wine, is dark, powerful and brooding in demeanor, almost shockingly so. The natural concentration of a year with low yields and small berries is very much in evidence. A rush of black cherry, plum, graphite, lavender and blue/purplish fruit builds as this virile, explosive wine shows off its arresting beauty. In a word: impressive. ~97 Vinous Media

Leading off with the 2019 Flight, which is 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc, this has a beautiful perfume of red cherries, raspberries, and flowers. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it shows the finesse, elegance, and lively style favored at this estate today, with perfectly integrated tannins and both richness and freshness. I love its overall balance as well as length, and it will benefit from just a few years of bottle age and should have upwards of two decades of overall longevity. ~ 94 Jeb Dunnuck

THE PRODUCER

Screaming Eagle

Screaming Eagle is Napa Valley’s ultimate cult winery, a tiny Oakville estate whose microscopic production and sky-high quality have made it one of the most coveted wines on earth.

Founded by Jean Phillips and elevated by legendary winemaker Heidi Peterson Barrett—whose touch also helped define Dalla Valle Maya and Grace Family—the estate became synonymous with precision, purity, and luxury Cabernet.

With gravelly, perfectly drained Oakville soils and obsessive vineyard selection, Screaming Eagle produces only a few hundred cases each year, crafting wines of extraordinary depth, aromatic intensity, and long-term aging potential.
