About The Wine

For more than 225 years, Louis Latour has stood as a defining force in Burgundy, guided by a simple conviction that great wines begin with exceptional vineyards and patient stewardship. Founded in 1797 and still family-owned today, the house has earned global respect through its long-held sites across the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, producing wines that favor clarity, balance, and age-worthiness over excess or fashion.

Few vineyards embody Burgundy’s layered history more completely than Clos Vougeot Grand Cru. First cultivated in the 12th century by the Cistercian monks of Cîteaux, the vineyard was established as a self-contained walled clos, complete with a winery equipped with four oak presses and vast underground cellars capable of holding thousands of barrels.

Over the centuries, the site evolved alongside Burgundy itself. In the 15th century, the grand manor was constructed at the heart of the clos, and in the 19th century, the entire estate was carefully restored by Léonce Bocquet.

Today, Clos Vougeot remains the largest Grand Cru vineyard in Burgundy, spanning 52 hectares and divided among more than 80 owners. Its mosaic of plots, soils, and exposures gives the vineyard its remarkable complexity, demanding both restraint and precision from those who work it.

The 2020 Louis Latour Clos Vougeot Grand Cru captures this depth with confidence and poise. In the glass, it shows a deep garnet color, opening with floral aromas layered with spice and blackcurrant. The palate is fresh, full, and rounded, framed by silky tannins and subtle toasty notes, with a length that speaks to both structure and refinement. This is classic Grand Cru Burgundy Pinot Noir, expressive yet composed, built to evolve gracefully over time.

A wine shaped by centuries of history, careful hands, and one of Burgundy’s most storied vineyards, Clos Vougeot remains a benchmark for collectors seeking depth, balance, and enduring character.

Dive into this fjord of perfectly ripe black fruit and this enormous pile of very fine tannins. So much vitality, in spite of the concentration on the full but definitely not opulent body. Clove and cardamon at the very expressive, long finish. Drink or hold. ~ 97 James Suckling

A floral-herbaceous nose is followed by a layer of black currants in this voluptuous expression. Dense and rich, with a perfume of rose and blood-orange peel enveloping firm, yet deep and brooding black cherries and thyme, the palate welcomes freshness with plum and black sanguine berry, framed with toasty notes. ~ 93 Wine Enthusiast

This red is focused on pure fruit flavors of black cherry, blackberry and black currant, shaded with violet and earth accents. Firm, with youthfully assertive tannins guarding the finish. Best from 2025 through 2040. ~ 93 Wine Spectator
