About The Wine

“Finesse is the balance between subtlety and power. Encompassing all of the notable elements without being heavy, oaky, pruney, or over-extracted.” — Matt Sands, Lithology Winemaker

This is Napa Valley Cabernet done right. The 2021 Lithology Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon blends fruit from Howell Mountain, Rutherford, Oakville, and Coombsville into a seamless, site-driven expression of place. The style is deliberate and composed, built on balance rather than excess, with freshness, mineral tension, and quiet power at its core.

At the helm is Alejandro Bulgheroni, an Argentinian-Italian billionaire whose journey from industrial engineering to global energy leadership eventually led him to wine. In California, Bulgheroni acquired the historic St. Helena estate that became Lithology, restoring the original stone winery and replanting vineyards with a singular focus on authenticity and terroir. The site, located at the base of Howell Mountain and prized for its mineral-rich soils, anchors a global portfolio that spans Argentina, Uruguay, Italy, France, Australia, and the United States.

Bulgheroni’s philosophy in wine mirrors his approach to business: invest in exceptional land, surround yourself with the best people, and allow each site to speak for itself. His estates work with some of the world’s most respected winemakers and consultants, including Alberto Antonini, Philippe Melka, and Michel Rolland, prioritizing precision, restraint, and transparency over trend-driven winemaking.

Since acquiring the St. Helena estate in 2014, Bulgheroni has assembled one of Napa Valley’s most accomplished teams. Melka, known for his work with Dominus, Bond, and Bryant Family, brings structure and polish without heaviness. Rolland contributes depth and architectural balance, drawing on decades of Bordeaux experience. Estate winemaker Matt Sands, formerly of Promontory and Dana Estates, ensures continuity, elegance, and a clear expression of site from vintage to vintage. The philosophy is simple, no excess, no heavy oak, just honest Napa Cabernet.

The 2021 vintage received 97 points from Wine Spectator and is widely regarded as one of Napa Valley’s finest of the century. Low yields, small berries, and a dry winter followed by a steady growing season delivered wines of exceptional concentration. The result is a wine with purity, ripe tannins, and long aging potential. Enjoy with air today, or cellar confidently through 2045..

Aging: Fermentation lasted 17–33 days, with aging split between 15 percent oak, 5 percent concrete, and 80 percent stainless steel. The wine was then aged 22 months in French oak, 62 percent new.

On the palate, soft, ripe black and red fruits and fresh acids give way to elegant tannins, providing framing and structure. This is a wonderful, utterly beautiful cabernet.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Lithology Napa Valley checks in as a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and a splash of Cabernet Franc coming from multiple terroirs throughout the valley. A gorgeous Cabernet, it has ripe red and black fruits as well as some tobacco and spicy, floral notes, medium to full body, ripe, velvety tannins, great mid-palate depth, and a great finish. ~96 Jeb Dunnuck

This gorgeous wine offers immense drinking pleasure from the first whiff to the last drop. A host of blackberry, blueberry, and black cherry fruit appears on the nose and palate. The tannins are impressively polished, and the finish is long and mineral-rich. ~96 Decanter

This is a captivating wine that unfolds with an alluring bouquet of aromas, dominated by luscious blueberries, ripe blackcurrants, and vibrant cassis, intertwined with sophisticated notes of tobacco, savory herbs, and a hint of spices that add depth and complexity. Underneath this aromatic tapestry, nuances of rich coffee and dark chocolate emerge, inviting further exploration. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and polished, showcasing a concentrated texture that envelops the senses. Each sip reveals layers of opulence, harmonizing the fruit and savory elements seamlessly. The finish is long and focused, leaving a lasting impression of dark fruits and subtle graphite, affirming the wine’s quality and character, making it a true standout in its class. ~96 International Wine Report

THE PRODUCER

Lithology

Nestled in the storied hills of St. Helena at the base of Howell Mountain, Lithology is a modern Napa Valley winery that celebrates the ancient geological forces that shape the region’s most distinguished Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

The estate sits on land that once formed part of the historic 1841 Rancho Carne Humana land grant and was first planted to vines in 1975; its original stone winery was later used by H. William Harlan as the Founders Room for Promontory and the inaugural Napa Valley Reserve vintages.

In 2014, international vintner Alejandro Bulgheroni, whose engineering background gives him a profound appreciation for soil and terroir, acquired the property and launched Lithology with a philosophy rooted in expressing place above all else. Today, the winery draws fruit from its own organic Estate Vineyard and elite sites across Oakville, Rutherford, and St. Helena to craft limited-production, single-vineyard wines that eloquently convey the mineral-rich soils of Napa Valley.
