About The Wine

Château d'Yquem needs no introduction. As the world's only Premier Cru Supérieur — a distinction held since the 1855 Classification — it is the undisputed benchmark of Sauternes and arguably the most prestigious wine estate on earth. But hidden within the same 100-hectare hilltop vineyard lives a second wine almost no one knows exists.

'Y' — pronounced "Ygrec" — is the estate's rare dry white, first produced in 1959 and made in fewer than 1,000 cases each vintage. The grapes come from the exact same vines that yield the legendary Sauternes, harvested earlier and vinified completely dry, with just a whisper of residual sugar (7.2 g/l in 2021). It is a wine of extraordinary terroir purity — flint, citrus, mineral tension — built for a collector's cellar and capable of evolving gracefully for 15 years or more.

The 2021 vintage earned 97 points from James Suckling and 95 points from Lisa Perrotti-Brown of The Wine Independent, with multiple critics calling it among the finest dry whites produced in Bordeaux that year. If you know d'Yquem, this is the bottle you've been waiting for. If you don't, prepare to be converted.

Dry Sweet

A blend of 65% Sauvignon Blanc and 35% Sémillon with 7.2 g/l residual sugar.

Bright and precise on the nose with notes of lime blossom, kumquat, crushed stone, and a distinctive struck-flint minerality, underscored by hints of kiwi, aniseed, and grapefruit.

The palate is medium to full-bodied with remarkable oiliness to the texture — a hallmark of the Yquem terroir — framed by racy acidity and flavors of dried lime, bitter pear, and white peach. The finish is long, zesty, and minerally, with a beguiling touch of sweetness that lingers. Best from 2026 onward; drink through 2036+.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Lime and spicy pear with crushed stone. Kumquats. Smoke and iron. Kiwi. Full and rounded with bitter pear and steel. Dried limes. Unique minerality. Bright acidity. Touch of sweetness at the end that makes it fascinating. 65% sauvignon blanc and 35% semillon. September release. Drink or hold. ~ 97 James Suckling

Delicate notes of honey-drizzled peaches, lemon tart, and lime leaves, leading to hints of coriander seed and green apples, with a waft of chalk dust. The medium-bodied palate has a wonderfully satiny texture, with crisp acidity cutting through the intense apple and citrus layers, finishing long and zesty. ~95 The Wine Independent

~ 95 The Wine Palate

From the same vines as its parent d'Yquem, the wine is fresh and full of ripe yellow fruits. Ripe apricots and honey come together with the beautiful texture in this rich, but dry, wine. Drink from 2027. ~ 94 Wine Enthusiast

Suave, with alluring acacia, elderflower and lemon pith notes backed by a long finish revealing racy and creamy aspects. Offers nice chalk and orange blossom details in the background, too. Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Drink now through 2028. ~ 94 Wine Spectator

THE PRODUCER

Chateau d’Yquem

Located on a hilltop in Sauternes, roughly fifty kilometers southeast of Bordeaux, Château d’Yquem is a place where history, landscape and discipline converge.

The estate has been shaped over more than four centuries, its vineyards spread across approximately 100 hectares — a rare scale for Sauternes, and a crucial element in Yquem’s ability to craft balance in challenging vintages.

At the heart of Yquem’s identity lies botrytis cinerea, the noble rot that concentrates sugars, acids and aromas. Yet at Yquem, botrytis is never rushed. Harvests unfold through multiple passes, sometimes stretching over weeks, as each parcel and even individual bunches are picked only when they reach the desired balance.

This selective approach explains not only the wine’s consistency, but also why certain vintages are simply not produced if conditions fail to align.
