About The Wine

If Napa Cabernet is the gold standard for American wine drinkers, Luján de Cujo Malbec is its South American counterpart — and Lagarde's 'Guarda' is one of the most compelling arguments for the appellation. Bodega Lagarde was founded in 1897 and has been in the hands of the Pescarmona family since 1969, now led by sisters Sofía and Lucila — two of the most respected names in Argentine wine. Winemaker Juan Roby has been crafting these wines for years, and the 'Guarda' is his calling card: a single-variety Malbec sourced from estate vineyards that date back to 1906 — vines over 115 years old, planted at 850 meters in the Drummond district of Luján de Cujo.

The Luján de Cujo D.O.C. is Argentina's first and most rigorous wine denomination — think of it as Argentina's answer to a French appellation contrôlée.

Only wines grown in specific, approved zones, from 100% Malbec, with defined aging requirements can carry the designation. That means when you open this bottle, you're drinking something that had to earn its label. This isn't a bulk Mendoza Malbec blended from across the province — it's a single-appellation wine with traceability, aging standards, and a clear sense of place.

For the wine enthusiast who loves a classic, structured red with real aging potential, this is a special bottle. The 'Guarda' is aged 12 months in French oak followed by 12 months in bottle before release — bringing a level of patience and craftsmanship that you rarely see at this price.

Whether you're opening it tonight with a ribeye or laying it down for a few more years, this is Argentine Malbec with genuine depth and pedigree.

100% Malbec.

Deep red with burgundy highlights. The nose leads with ripe red and black fruits — plum, dark cherry, and blackberry — layered with vanilla, chocolate, and a subtle smokiness from 12 months in French oak.

On the palate, the wine is concentrated and richly textured, with the silky tannins that are a hallmark of old-vine Luján de Cujo Malbec. Good natural acidity keeps things lively and balanced through a long, persistent finish with traces of dark berry and spice.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2021 Malbec (D.O.C.) Guarda is sourced from Finca Las Beatas in Agrelo and La Jacinta in Perdriel, both in Luján de Cuyo. Aged for up to 12 months in French oak barrels, this purple wine unfolds aromas of plums and violets, along with spicy pepper hints and cedar notes. Dry, plush and supple on the palate, the velvety mouthfeel is exactly what you would expect from a Luján de Cuyo Malbec: a pristine red from a cold, beautiful vintage. ~ 93 Vinous Media

Attractive aromas of plums and blueberries with hints of dried blood orange, cardamom and spicy herbs. Medium- to full-bodied with a ripe and mellow core of dark fruit in the middle, wrapped with some melting, glossy tannins. Lingering, berry-soaked finish. Drink or hold. ~ 92 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Bodega Lagarde

Bodega Lagarde is a pioneering, family-run estate in Mendoza, led today by third-generation sisters Sofía and Lucila Pescarmona. Known for innovation and sustainability, the Pescarmona family helped reshape Argentine wine by introducing non-traditional varieties and championing site-driven winemaking long before it was a trend.

Their high-altitude vineyards in Luján de Cuyo and Tupungato—bordering iconic sites like the Adrianna Vineyard—produce elegantly crafted wines that capture the purity, energy, and character of Mendoza’s most coveted terroirs.
