About the Wine

Meet Emmerich Knoll III, a passionate ambassador for Austria’s Wachau wine region. He farms 37 acres of family vineyards, producing wines that beautifully showcase the unique Unterloiben terroir—home to some of Austria’s most celebrated vineyards. For over three generations, the Knoll family has proudly owned and operated this treasured winery.

While their focus is on Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, they also grow small amounts of Rivaner, Gelber Traminer, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay, making their offerings diverse and exciting.

As a proud member of “Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus”—an elite association of Wachau winemakers following strict quality standards—Knoll Winery consistently produces wines that earn top spots on Michelin restaurant including the legendary 3-star Michelin restaurant, The French Laundry.

And about that famous label? While some jokingly call it the “exploding Jesus,” it actually depicts St. Urban, based on a painting by renowned Austrian artist Siegfried Stoitzner. You can see the original hanging in the Knoll family’s 400-year-old restaurant, Loibnerhof.

The Wachau, less than 15 miles long and just an hour from Vienna, is one of Austria’s most celebrated wine regions. Its steep, stone-terraced vineyards rise along the north bank of the Danube River, creating a breathtaking landscape and ideal conditions for winemaking.

In the Kreutles vineyard, ancient winds deposited deep löss soils rich with calcareous gneiss—perfect for Grüner Veltliner. Knoll’s wines from Kreutles earn the prestigious “Smaragd” designation, awarded only to the finest Wachau wines.

Grüner Veltliner, Austria’s flagship grape, is a natural cross of Traminer and St. Georgen. It covers nearly 30% of the country’s vineyards and is beloved by sommeliers worldwide for its high acidity and versatility with food. From easy-drinking wines to complex masterpieces, Grüner delights with its flavors of green apple and distinctive white pepper spice.

Critic Review

Wonderful cool and herbal nose, with a ton of fruit for a wine of this category. Ripe and concentrated, but still only medium-weight. Long finish that’s brimming with yellow-apple and delicately earthy character. Very long, sophisticated finish. Drink or hold. ~94 James Suckling

Light yellow green, silver reflections. Delicate meadow herbs, hints of fresh apricots and yellow apple, delicate floral honey. Juicy, elegant and balanced, a touch of mango, well-integrated acidity, a versatile food wine, it is fresh and shows good length. ~93 Falstaff

Light color, nuanced, cool aroma, verbena, apricot, pomelo, juicy wine, lively texture, elegant drinking flow, piquant finish, kumquat in the aftertaste. ~93 A La Carte Wein-Guide

A well-delineated white, this offers hints of meringue, followed by melon and interesting acorn squash. The acidity keeps everything intact, as the hints of elderflower chime in at the midpalate. This is rounds up on a floral note, with an inviting finish. ~92 Wine Enthusiast
