About The Wine

With vineyards that date back to the 16th century, this iconic estate in the heart of Pessac-Leognan has seen it all. Originally known as Haut Truchon, the estate became Chateau Bouscaut in 1929, but the true test of its legacy came in 1960 when a fire nearly destroyed the chateau. What remained were the historic cellars—symbols of resilience.

Victor Place, the passionate owner, rebuilt the chateau from the ground up, and in 1968, a group of New York investors stepped in. They made a brilliant move by hiring the team from Chateau Haut Brion to manage the estate. Under the Lurton family since 1979, Chateau Bouscaut has flourished. Sophie Lurton and her husband Laurent Cogombles have poured their hearts into the estate, renovating the cellars and acquiring Chateau Lamothe Bouscaut.

Today, Chateau Bouscaut’s 52-hectare vineyard is the largest in the Cadaujac commune. With 35 hectares of red wine grapes and 10 hectares of white, it’s a perfect mix of tradition and innovation. The reds, a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, grow on gravel, clay, and limestone soils. The whites—mainly Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon—are handpicked with care. The Semillon vines here are some of the oldest in the region, dating back to 1850.

Chateau Bouscaut has gone organic with the 2023 vintage, certified with HVE3 since 2018. They’re committed to producing wines that are as sustainable as they are exceptional.

2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 95 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A new paradigm for Bordeaux. Very aromatic and sleek, fresh and pure in feel, with all major varietals performing well; far more consistent than the 2018-2020 trio."

This Cru Classé de Graves was acquired by the Lurton family in 1979 and boasts 45 hectares of vineyards, with the red varieties being 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Malbec. The expected gravel (graves) and clay are marked by a significant presence of limestone, which aids maturation even in warmer years like 2022. Aromas of plum, herbs, and flowers. Juicy fruit on the palate with a slight cigar-box note, as if already showing some evolution. The finish reinforces the tobacco. The texture and polished tannins with good acidity contribute to fluidity. Aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, 30% new. ~92 Revista Adega
