About The Wine

Chateau Monbousquet has always been recognized as a high-performing Chateau in Bordeaux. In 1999 when it was purchased by Gerard Perse, the quality of the wine, drastically improved, so much that some years later, in 2006, the estate was elevated to Grand Cru Classe. Today legend Michel Rolland consults. His lifetime of expertise has helped position this Chateau as one of the most awarded estates in Saint Emilion.

Located over 3 miles away from Premier Grand Cru Classified Chateau Angelus, Ausone, and Pavie, this estate is located in a truly exceptional terroir with mostly warm, deep gravel to the south and sandy-clay soils to the north. As at Cheval Blanc and Figeac, its soils are largely gravel, and thus warm. The warm soils in the vineyards allow for the relatively late-ripening Cabernets to ripen perfectly. This natural feature accounts for a particularly large proportion of Cabernet grapes in the vineyard’s composition.

Dating back to 1540, Chateau Monbousquet is no stranger to winemaking. In its long history, the estate has always been highly regarded for the wine that is produced, known both for power and finesse.

2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 97 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A beautiful vintage. Merlot berries were small and concentrated; Cabernet Franc also relished the conditions. Wines are very aromatic and sleek, with Pomerol and St.-Emilion excelling"

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2022 Chateau Monbousquet is blockbuster stuff. It might not be for the classic traditionalists out there, but it's a “wow” wine for sure. Darker currants, chocolate, tobacco, crushed stone and graphite define the aromatics, and it's full-bodied, with a deep, layered, opulent mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It's a blockbuster yet seamless, layered, flawlessly balanced Monbousquet that, in my opinion, rivals any vintage of this cuvée ever produced. Drink bottles over the coming two decades. ~96 Jeb Dunnuck

Dark ruby colour, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Ripe black cherry fruit, subtle nougat, candied orange zest, inviting bouquet. Complex, sweet fruit of ripe figs, velvety, supporting tannins, elegant and accessible, a great food wine with salty finish. Good ageing potential. ~95 Falstaff

This drips with boysenberry, mulberry and blackberry confiture notes that just won't quit, spilling out in all directions as singed apple wood, violet and licorice snap attempt to keep everything reined in. The seductive, velvety mouthfeel and a rather luxurious display of toast play their part as well. For those who enjoy the power style. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2027 through 2042. ~94 Wine Spectator

Intense blackberry and blueberry aromas. Perfumed. Full-bodied and layered with soft and silky tannins and pretty fruit with just a hint of coffee in the finish. Chocolate, meat and berries at the end as well. Really attractive now but will age beautifully. Fruit-forward style. Better after 2028. ~94 James Suckling

Black cherry, fennel, bitter dark chocolate, cedar and graphite, harvest September 15 to 27, so around one week earlier than usual, 30hl/h yield, In the spirit of Monbousquet, has an opulence to it. 50% new oak for ageing. ~92 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
