About The Wine

Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, located in Pauillac, is a neighbor to some of the most emblematic Chateaux in the world, like Rothschild Lafite Rothschild, and Chateau Latour.

Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is classified as a Second Growth from the 1855 Grand Cru Classification. This is the second wine from the famed estate. Sourced from the same estate from younger vines, the Réserve was created and sold for the first time in 1973 (the label was changed from Reserve de la Comtesse in 2017, and this wine is now named Reserve).

The second wine represents between 20 percent and 50 percent of the total production of the Chateau. From the same soil, the second wine benefits from the technology and reputation of the great wine and is produced by the hands of the same winemaking team. The archives kept at Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande mention the existence of a second wine as early as the 19th century.

Like almost all of Pauillac, the terroir is a dream site overlooking the Gironde River. The soils of this 180-acre estate are composed of quaternary gravel deposits, large pebbles and sand, and an excellent maritime climate.

The Pichon Comtesse Réserve mirrors the soul of its legendary vineyard—the same noble terroir, the same meticulous care, but with the vitality of youth. Crafted as a more approachable expression of the Grand Vin, it reflects the grace and depth of Pauillac, where every vintage captures the balance between Cabernet Sauvignon power and Merlot refinement.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The al dente fruit is so attractive with blackcurrants, dark plums, and orange peel. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with tannins that start slowly, building at the end to a crescendo of intensity and power. It’s muscular and chewy but not overdone. A great second wine of Pichon Lalande. Needs time to soften and come together. ~ 95 James Suckling

Deep garnet, opaque core, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. Black cherries, blackberries, some cassis, and fine oak. Good complexity, dark wild berryish fruit, taut tannins that are perfectly integrated. Persistent, delicate nougat on the finish, toasty aromas in the aftertaste, certain aging potential. ~ 95 Falstaff

Laden with warmed cassis and dark plum notes, this moves slowly as bittersweet cocoa, espresso crema, and dark tobacco accents fill in along the way. Cedar and savory hints add range and cut to the finish, and there's ample latent depth. A touch old school and can handle some cellaring. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc ~ 93 Wine Spectator

Readers shouldn't overlook the 2022 Resèrve de la Comtesse, a lovely wine that's one of the most accomplished second wines of Bordeaux. Offering up aromas of sweet minty berries, burning embers, pencil shavings, and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, lavish and aromatic, with an almost exotic core of fruit, powdery tannins, and a penetrating finish. ~ 93 Robert Parker

Truffle, tobacco leaves, black currants, cedar, and hints of peppery spice show in the perfume. On the palate, the wine is clearly a baby Pichon. It is medium-bodied, elegant, soft, silky, and lifted, with layers of finesse-oriented dark, red pit fruits that make you want to go back for another sip. This is just as good as most vintages of the Grand Vin from the 80s and 90s. The wine blends 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. ~93 The Wine Cellar

THE PRODUCER

Chateau Pichon

Founded in the late 17th century, Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of Pauillac’s most storied estates, classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru (Second Growth) in 1855.

Situated on a prized stretch of gravelly soils overlooking the Gironde River, the estate lies just across the road from Château Latour and near Lafite Rothschild, sharing the same terroir that defines Bordeaux’s greatest wines. Today, under meticulous stewardship and guided by a philosophy that blends feminine elegance with Pauillac’s signature power, Pichon Comtesse continues to produce wines of remarkable balance, depth, and grace—a timeless expression of Left Bank heritage and precision.
