About The Wine

The Leflaive legacy stretches back to 1717, when Claude Leflaive planted the family’s roots in Puligny-Montrachet with a fearless vision: to shape one of Burgundy’s great vineyard estates. That vision became reality between 1910 and 1930, as Joseph Leflaive expanded the domaine through bold, strategic acquisitions—laying the groundwork for a name now synonymous with the pinnacle of white Burgundy.

Still entirely family-owned, Domaine Leflaive is today led by Brice de La Morandière, Joseph’s great-grandson and the fourth generation to guide the estate. With an international business career behind him and the pioneering spirit of Anne-Claude Leflaive, a leader in biodynamic viticulture, Brice carries the domaine forward with the same uncompromising values: profound respect for terroir, humility before nature, and a relentless pursuit of purity and excellence.

"The 2022 vintage has turned out very nicely at Domaine Leflaive. Picking decisions at this address in recent years, under the direction of Pierre Vincent, have tended to privilege freshness, and a couple of wines appeared to have been picked a little on the early side if one's tastes lean toward the texture and plenitude that only full maturity can impart; but overall, this is a strong vintage that is developing a touch of noble reduction in bottle and which is going to age with grace. As usual, élevage began with a year in barrel (from a variety of coopers, including Séguin Moreau and Chassin) followed by six months or so in tank on the lees before bottling under Diam 30." ~ Robert Parker

Pale lemon-gold with flawless clarity. The nose is at once seductive and restrained — white peach, pear, and apple blossom layered over oyster shell, wet chalk, and a faint, inviting mineral reduction that dissipates quickly in the glass.

There is a floral lift, more pronounced here than in any of Leflaive's other Grand Crus, that gives the wine an almost ethereal quality on the nose.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a silky, seamless texture and a core of tightly wound tension. The fruit is rich but never heavy — lemon curd, white peach, and toasted hazelnut move through a saline, finely drawn mid-palate that builds steadily toward a finish of extraordinary length and precision.

The acid spine is firm but perfectly integrated, providing the structure this wine needs to develop over the coming decade and beyond. As critics have noted, this demands patience: the 2022 is preloaded with potential, but its full brilliance will reveal itself after several more years in bottle.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Sleek and racy yet packed with peach, apple, lemon, hazelnut and citronella aromas and flavors. Builds nicely on the palate while gaining in intensity to the long aftertaste, infused with butter, pastry, spice and mineral notes. This just keeps coming at you, offering finesse rather than power. Best from 2027 through 2038. 490 cases made, 98 cases imported. ~ 96 Wine Spectator

The 2022 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a captivating sea cave and oyster shell-scented nose." The palate carries tremendous weight on the finish while retaining linearity and focus — a wine preloaded with potential that will demand time in bottle. ~ 96 Vinous Media

Unwinding in the glass with notes of pear, white flowers, hazelnuts and spices, Leflaive's 2022 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, with a cool, harmonious, integrated profile and a long, mouthwatering finish. There's a touch more density here than in the Pucelles, but the two are quite similar in style this year. ~ 95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Grand Cru from first sniff." Morris finds the wine detailed and surprisingly stony, with a velvet quality on the nose, a concentration of pure white fruit, fine tension, and a finish that is nuanced throughout. ~ 94-96 Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

THE PRODUCER

Domaine Leflaive

The estate as we know it today took shape between 1910 and 1930, when Joseph Leflaive expanded the domaine through strategic acquisitions of vineyards and homes—laying the foundation for one of Burgundy’s greatest names.

Since its creation, Domaine Leflaive has remained entirely family-owned. Today, leadership rests with Brice de La Morandière, Joseph Leflaive’s great-grandson and the fourth generation at the helm.

After a successful international business career, he stepped in following the passing of Anne-Claude, a trailblazer in biodynamic viticulture.
