About The Wine

Donald Hess wasn’t looking for the easy path—he was chasing the extraordinary. In 1978, he climbed high into the rugged slopes of Mount Veeder and founded The Hess Collection Winery atop one of Napa’s oldest historic sites.

At a time when almost no one dared to plant vines at elevation, Hess saw what others overlooked: volcanic soils, fierce mountain exposures, and a cool-climate edge that could shape wines with power, elegance, and layered complexity. What began as a bold gamble became a groundbreaking legacy—proof that greatness often lives far above the valley floor.

2022 Lion Tamer Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley carries that same spirit of bold mountain winemaking, blending power and finesse in true Hess Persson fashion. Sourced from select Napa vineyards, including the rugged elevations that first inspired Donald Hess, this Cabernet earns its name by taming intensity with balance—lush dark fruit framed by supple tannins, lifted freshness, and the volcanic imprint of the region.

The addition of Malbec brings a vibrant juiciness that softens the wine’s wild edges, creating a polished, deeply expressive Cabernet that roars with character yet finishes with undeniable grace.

The 2022 vintage saw a harvest period from September 9th to October 17th, with grapes benefiting from optimal ripening conditions. This exquisite blend is composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec, and 2% Petite Sirah, aged for 20 months in 40% new French and American oak, ensuring structure and nuanced complexity.

Winemaking leverages advanced technology in the Lions Head Cellar, including optical sorting for peak berry quality and cutting-edge tanks for precise fermentation control, guaranteeing wines that truly reflect their distinctive origins.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Muscular and bold, this Malbec-based red blend delivers the succulent, ripe fruits of the variety, brought together with the structure and depth of Petite Sirah and Cabernet. Oak spices and lush fruits fill the mouth with flavor. ~ #78 Top 100 Wines of 2025, 92 Wine Enthusiast

It's a nicely pumped-up cabernet that's moderately tannic and very generous in fruit and oak spice flavors. Full-bodied, broad and delicious, leading with blueberries, cocoa and blackberries, then hints of vanilla bean in the finish from a portion of American oak barrels used for aging. 12% Malbec and 2% Petite Sirah go into this big wine. Drink now or hold. ~ 91 James Suckling

A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec (the lion tamer), and 2% Petite Sirah, the 2022 Lion Tamer Cabernet Sauvignon serves up bright red berries—raspberries and cherries—some slightly herbal nuances similar to fresh dill, and dried sage. Medium to full-bodied, it's supple and easy to drink, nothing too serious, with some fine-grained tannins on the finish. ~ 90 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

THE PRODUCER

Hess Persson Estates

Hess Persson Estates traces its roots to Donald Hess’s bold vision in the late 1970s, when he saw potential in the rugged slopes of Mount Veeder long before the region became synonymous with world-class Cabernet. What began as a pioneering adventure evolved into a legacy of mountain winemaking defined by patience, precision, and a deep respect for the land.

Today, under the stewardship of the Hess and Persson families, the estate continues to craft wines shaped by elevation, volcanic soils, and the cool marine influence that gives Mount Veeder fruit its unmistakable intensity and structure. Every bottle reflects a philosophy built on resilience and innovation—an ongoing story of a mountain estate that rises above the ordinary, vintage after vintage.
