About The Wine

Tucked high in the Andes lies Gualtallary, a hidden gem in Mendoza—and what James Suckling calls “Mendoza’s Montrachet.”

It’s one of the highest-altitude winegrowing regions in Argentina, known for its limestone-rich soils and intense sunlight. Today, Gualtallary stands among the most acclaimed terroirs in the world, producing wines with striking elegance, purity, and depth.

Aluvia is built around a single 2.4-hectare site in Gualtallary, a sub-region of Mendoza's Uco Valley that wine writers have started calling the "Grand Cru" of Argentina. The vineyard sits on an ancient streambed — alluvial rocks dusted with limestone and calcium carbonate, the kind of soil that would make a Burgundy grower sit up straight. The river that shaped this land, the Las Tunas, shifted course thousands of years ago when the Monasterio hill rose up nearby, leaving behind a tight patchwork of stones and chalk that almost no other vineyard in Argentina can match.

Fruit is hand-harvested at the start of April and aged 16 months in French oak — mostly first-use, with about 10% in second- and third-use barrels to keep the wood from running over the fruit.

The result is a Malbec that drinks more like a serious mountain red than the soft, jammy stuff most U.S. drinkers associate with the grape: plush, savory, and built for slow sipping.

It's brand new to the U.S. market — Aluvia only just started shipping here in late 2025 — so this is one of those wines you'll tell your friends about in six months when they can't find it anywhere.

100% Malbec.

A deep violet-black core leads into aromas of black plum, ripe blackberry, and cassis layered with violets, graphite, and a fine dusting of mountain herbs.

The palate is full but lifted — that signature Gualtallary tension — with chalky minerality, dark cherry and mulberry fruit, and well-integrated French oak adding cocoa and clove. Fine-grained tannins frame a long, savory finish.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A very elegant nose with subtle red fruit, dried flowers, underbrush and herbal nuances, alongside tapenade and pepper. The palate is equally refined, with succulent dark fruit. The quality of the tannins brings tremendous balance and definition—velvety yet precise. Juicy but serious, with an almost effervescent energy. 20% whole-cluster fermentation. Drink or hold. ~ 96 James Suckling

A fresh, dynamic and finely structured red, with citrus peel and mountain herbs up front. Shows vibrancy yet silkiness on the palate, which is filled with wild berry and spiced red currant notes that linger around nimble tannins. Drink now through 2036. 2,000 cases made, 450 cases imported. ~ 91 Wine Spectator

THE PRODUCER

Aluvia

Aluvia is a high-altitude, terroir-driven project in Gualtallary—part of Mendoza’s Uco Valley—anchored in vineyards first planted in 2007 and shaped by alluvial, limestone-rich soils that define every bottle.

Though part of the broader Doña Paula estate, it stands out for its focused expression of place, guided in the vineyard by head of viticulture Martín Kaiser and in the cellar by winemaker Andrea Tansini, both dedicated to crafting wines that reflect the cool climate and unique geology of this exceptional site.
