About The Wine

Bodega Mendel is a boutique winery in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, founded by the Sielecki family and built around blocks of old-vine fruit in the heart of Argentina's most historic growing zone. Mendel made its name early on as a small-production house focused on serious, age-worthy reds expressing Mendoza terroir rather than chasing volume.

The wine is made by Roberto de la Mota, Mendel's winemaker and partner and one of the most influential figures in Argentine wine. He grew up in the cellar alongside his father, the legendary 20th-century winemaker Raúl de la Mota, and trained in France at Montpellier, where he was mentored by the renowned enologist Émile Peynaud. Before Mendel, de la Mota co-created Cheval des Andes — the celebrated joint venture between Terrazas de los Andes and Bordeaux's Château Cheval Blanc — and has served as president of the DOC Luján de Cuyo. He was recognized as Winemaker of the Year in 2026 by Descorchados.

James Suckling has been a consistent champion of the wine across vintages, recently describing the Mendel Cabernet's profile of fine spice, tobacco, graphite, and dark currant, with tight, fine tannins and a firm, juicy finish.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Complex nose showing ashy blackcurrants, grilled dark spices, briars and cigar box. Full-bodied on the palate with a mouthful of fine, dusty tannins. Structured and very long. Showing lots of potential. Drink from 2025. ~94 James Suckling

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Finca de Los Andes hails from ungrafted vines planted in 1994 and matured in equal parts new, second- and third-use barrique for 12 months. It opens with a dramatic, lush and dark-fruited nose, introducing a sleek, velvety and polished palate. It concludes with a refined, structured and spice-inflected finish. This is a sumptuous yet contemporary expression of Lujan de Cuyo. ~92 Wine Advocate

This is a delicious and fresh Cabernet Sauvignon from Lujan de Cuyo. A note of black pepper adds spice to a bouquet of ripe strawberries and red plums. Similar fruit flavors and leafy notes burst on the palate. It has a fine texture, with red berries shaping its tasty finish. ~91 Wine Enthusiast

Thick and rich, this 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Finca de los Andes is tannic and powerfully built, with full-bodied intensity and grip. The red and black currant and cherry fruit is overlaid in cedar, leather, and toasted oak, grippy through a long finish. It should drink best 2028-2032. ~90 Jeb Dunnuck

THE PRODUCER

Mendel

Two 96-point scores — James Suckling and Wine Advocate — plus 95 from Vinous. Finca Remota is sourced from a high-altitude estate in Mendoza's Paraje Altamira, where Roberto de la Mota, one of Argentina's greatest winemakers, vinifies old vines planted in 1947. The days are blazing; the nights drop sharply. That diurnal shift creates the concentration and freshness you taste simultaneously in this wine. Bodegas Mendel is located next to one of the oldest Malbec vineyards in Luján de Cuyo, Argentina. The original winery is over 110 years old. One of Mendel's estate vineyards is located in the Perdriel district, nearly 100 years old. New owners came in 20 years ago and renamed the winery Mendel after the owner's father's given name.
