About The Wine

In 1970, San Francisco firefighter Cecil De Loach and his wife Christine bought the Barbieri Ranch in Russian River Valley for just over $50,000. Three years later, they became the first to plant Pinot Noir in the immediate area — and built what would become a Sonoma landmark. After selling De Loach Vineyards in 2003, they launched Hook & Ladder the same year, naming it after Cecil's 17 years on the San Francisco fire department. Today, grandson Jason De Loach helms the winery, farming 375 acres across historic estate sites — Olivet Ranch, Stegman Ranch, Severson Ranch — parcels first worked by Italian immigrants in the late 1800s.

Russian River Valley Chardonnay is California's answer to white Burgundy: cool fog, long hang time, bright acid underneath ripe fruit. Hook & Ladder's 2024 leans into that balance — creamy and full-bodied, but lifted by refreshing acidity that keeps it from collapsing into butter soup. The oak is there — toasty, vanilla-edged — but it's integrated, not loud.

Floral notes, honey, green apple, and light butterscotch open the bouquet. The palate shows creamy green apple, a touch of nectarine, and guava on the finish — tropical but restrained, the kind of richness that doesn't wear you out by glass two. Golden pear and pineapple round out the mid-palate. The finish lingers, creamy but clean.

This is $25 Chardonnay that drinks like bottles twice the price — the kind of wine that makes you wonder why you're spending $50 at retail for less depth. Russian River fruit, old-family pedigree, and a price that makes the twelve-pack the obvious call.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Aromas of ripe pears, lemon confit, toasted hazelnuts and spices. The full-bodied palate has a smooth, textural mouthfeel balanced by bright acidity, showing a mix of fruit and oak influence. Drink now. ~90 JS

THE PRODUCER

Hook & Ladder

Hook & Ladder sources its grapes from Sweetwater Land & Cattle Co., a grape farming operation owned by Cecil De Loach, which comprises 375 acres of vineyard in Russian River Valley. The winery produces blends and varietal wines including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, and Gewurztraminer. Total annual case production is approximately 25,000 cases. Hook & Ladder produces extra virgin olive oil from their Los Amigos Ranch in Healdsburg, CA. Hook & Ladder owns four other wine brands: Hartman Lane Vineyards & Winery, Tuscan Ridge, Sweetwater, and Four Rows. In 2005 Cecil and Christine De Loach started a new winery, Hook & Ladder. Hook & Ladder was founded after DeLoach Vineyards filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2003.
