About The Wine

Torre Zambra sits in the village of Villamagna, in Abruzzo's Colline Teatine hills, where sea breezes off the Adriatic meet cool air sweeping down from the Maiella mountains.

The estate takes its name from an old watchtower once held by the Zambra barons; in 1910, great-grandfather Vincenzo Cerchio acquired the land and planted the family's first Montepulciano and Trebbiano vines. Those early vineyards were lost in the Second World War, but the family replanted and formally founded the winery in 1961.

Today the estate is run by the fourth generation, led by Federico De Cerchio, farming organically across its holdings—certified organic since 2018—and leaning on native-yeast fermentation to keep the wines honest to their place. Villamagna is also home to one of the smallest DOCs in the world, and the De Cerchio family has been central to putting it on the map.

Colle Maggio is named for the single hillside it comes from—a southeast-facing slope of clay-limestone soil within Villamagna. It's 100% Montepulciano, the native monarch of Abruzzo, and it's bottled under the broader Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC rather than the estate's flagship Villamagna DOC.

After fermentation and maceration in stainless steel, the wine is aged in concrete and then in French and Slavonian oak tonneaux before bottle rest, building a deeply colored, structured red that drinks well above its price.

Eye: Deep, near-opaque ruby with purple-violet reflections.

Nose: Intense and dark—black cherry, plum and wild berry, with cocoa, tobacco, coffee and a savory note of earth and dried herb.

Palate: Full and rounded, with ripe dark fruit framed by grippy, fine-grained tannins and lively acidity; a long, spiced finish closes on chocolate and the bitter-almond signature typical of Montepulciano.

Drinking Window: Now through approximately 2030.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

On the nose, freshly brewed coffee and a peppery flintiness balance malted chocolate dusted over sweet ripe blackberries and black cherries. The fruit stays sweet, ripe and chocolate-covered on the palate, but more metallic earth elements and savory, spicy notes push back, anchored in powerful tannins and a lingering peppery heat that drives through the finish. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is usually either too indulgent or too severe—this is a great example of a bottle that gives you the best of all worlds and at a killer price point. ~ 92 Wine Enthusiast

The 2024 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colle Maggio opens with a woodsy bouquet of dried herbs, pine shavings, flowery undergrowth and dried black cherries. Nuances of clove and spiced blood orange complicate ripe red berry fruits. The 2024 leaves edgy tannins, a bump of vibrant acidity and a licorice tinge. Very nice. ~ 92 Vinous Media

Intense ruby red with purple reflections. Very open nose, plum, black cherry compote and nutmeg. Clearer, dark fruit on the palate, deep and very savoury, on fine malt flavours, delicate tannin, savoury finish. ~ 91 Falstaff
