When the 1855 Classification designated only five First Growths, Mouton-Rothschild was conspicuously absent—classified Second Growth despite producing wines that rivaled the greatest châteaux in Bordeaux. Baron Philippe de Rothschild declared: "Premier ne puis, second ne daigne, Mouton suis"—First I cannot be, second I do not deign to be, Mouton I am.

For 118 years, Mouton produced wines of First Growth caliber while carrying a Second Growth designation. Finally, in 1973, the French government did what had never been done before and has never been done since: they changed the 1855 Classification. Mouton-Rothschild was elevated to Premier Cru Classé.

The motto changed to: "Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change"—First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change.

This is the only château to ever break into the First Growths. The only estate powerful enough to rewrite history.
