About The Wine

“Barolo is more than one of the world's great wines and a partner to one of Italy's most varied and refined cuisines. It's an evocative landscape of gently rolling hills covered by a quilt of vineyards and topped by medieval villages with winding cobblestone streets and views to the Alps.” ~ Wine Spectator.

The Boroli family is a well-known Piedmontese family of entrepreneurs. They have ventured into the textile industry, then into publishing, and since the early 90’s they also embarked on their adventure in wine.

It all started with Silvano and Elena Boroli, (who were living a hectic, busy life between the textile and the publishing industry) felt like they needed a quiet and peaceful place; a project that would connect them with their land, and most importantly, their passion of fine wine and food, and so the restaurant Locanda del Pilone was born. The couple turned their farmhouse (which had already some acres of vineyard planted) into a luxurious hotel and restaurant, that’s still operating to date. Fun fact: The restaurant achieved a Michelin star, and its wine menu features mainly Boroli wines.

However, something was missing for the Boroli family: To produce their own wines. In early 2000, the family’s wine dream began, and today, this artisanal winery is run by Silvano and Elena and his 4 sons.

The vineyards are located right in the heart of Barolo, in Castiglione Falletto (Cascina La Brunella) and Barolo (Borgata Cerequio), these regions host the most famous historic Barolo crus.

The winery itself it’s a work of art, an ode to the Barolo appellation. It was designed by architect Guido Boroli, (one of the 4 brothers) and features a unique landscape that oversees the vineyards. The design has been published in major architecture and design magazines as one of the best combinations between tradition and innovation.

In the vineyard, the work is flawless. The family is focused on extreme quality to produce unique Barolo wines, their mantra is “Good work in the vineyard is the Genesis of superior wines” and they reflect that in their high-quality Barolos. 2015 vintage is the one Suckling himself called "the best Barolo since 2010 — maybe better." Two-thirds of the 350+ Barolos his team tasted scored 93 points or above. Boroli's Cerequio is a benchmark from this benchmark year: full-bodied, structured, and built around the elegant, sandy-soil signature that makes Cerequio one of the most prized addresses in Piedmont.

Achille Boroli — who took over family winemaking in 2012 after building the Boroli restaurant to Michelin-starred status — sources from a 1.3-hectare parcel of 30-year-old vines, ferments in stainless steel, macerates 20–25 days under submerged cap, then ages 18 months in large neutral oak (1000–2500 liter casks) followed by at least a year of bottle rest.

Only 5,856 bottles were made. And after a decade in the cellar, the 2015 is just now entering its prime drinking window.

A clear ruby red in the glass with light garnet reflections. Intense, fruity aromas open with red fruit, plum, and cherry layered over wild violets, chamomile, and bold black pepper.

The structure is full-bodied and generous, with lively dark fruit, perfectly integrated tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, savory finish carrying notes of black tea, rose petal, and Cerequio's signature mineral elegance.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Elegant bright ruby red. Fragrant and inviting nose of strawberries with whipped cream, icing sugar, elderflower and roses. Flattering palate with clear fruit and appealing acidity, unfolds into a complex style, punchy on the palate with a clear, slightly salty finish. ~ 95 Falstaff

This shows citrus rind and ripe red cherries in abundance, leading to an open-knit feel on the palate, which reflects the warmth of the vintage. Succulent finish, with plenty of bright, tangy red-fruit flavor. ~ 94 James Suckling
