About the Wine
Friendly, approachable, and full of juicy fruit flavor. Barbera produces wines in a wide range of styles from young and fruity to serious, spicy, and age-worthy. Barbera is typically marked by red cherry, raspberry, and blackberry flavors backed by a signature zingy acidity and smooth tannins. Barbera planted in Alba takes on a more powerful, structured personality than that of its counterparts in Asti.
Mirafiori Winery is a 300-acre Bionatural Reserve in the beautiful Serralunga d'Alba, at the core of the renowned Barolo region, right there with iconic producers like Giacomo Conterno or Roberto Voerzio, where Barolos can often exceed $300.
It dates back to over 160. In the 19th century, a nobleman with a modern vision, Emanuele Alberto Guerrieri, Count of Mirafiore, son of Italy's first King, embarked on a remarkable wine journey. He founded Casa E. di Mirafiore, a winery that aimed not only to craft exceptional wines but also to create a thriving village. This village, a real community, housed 250 people, all employed by the winery. Even today, 15 families call it home. Every corner of this place tells a unique story, making it Italy's first storytelling village
Casa E. di Mirafiore has always been ahead of its time. Since 2018, it has proudly held the title of an Organic Estate. With vineyards in the Barolo and Fontanafredda subzones, it exclusively produces wines from its estate-owned vineyards, including the renowned Barolo DOCG crus, Lazzarito and Paiagallo.
2016 was an epic year for this region. Vinous Media blessed this vintage with a 98-point review and said: "Two thousand sixteen is an extraordinary vintage full of tremendous wines. Perhaps more importantly, average quality is exceptionally high."
The grapes are grown exclusively on estate-owned vineyards, facing east and southwest in a high and mid-hillside position.
Aging: 1 year in oak barrels.
Tasting Notes: 100% Barbera. Great character, with pronounced acidity and flavor. The color is dark ruby-red with purple highlights; the nose brimming over with leather, black licorice, coffee and blackberry. This Barbera d’Alba starts on the palate providing a warm feeling of volume and body, with the fruit blending marvelously with the soft tannins and the acidity, while its finish is long and savory.
Reviews
This boasts intense aromas that evoke ripe black plum, new leather, clove and purple flowers. The concentrated palate delivers blackberry jam, brandied black cherry, cinnamon and mint, while velvety tannins provide polished support. ~91 Wine Enthusiast
A fresh and lively Barbera with blue fruit, licorice and hints of spices following through to a medium body with light tannins. A fruity and lightly salty finish. Drink now. ~91 James Suckling
