Among the best of a new breed of Bordeaux varietal wines from Happy Canyon in Santa Barbara, this wine is literally a show-stopper. This wine stole the Best in Show award at the Global Wine Challenge and was awarded the #1 wine among all entrants.
If you haven't had a chance to taste Bordeaux varietal wines from Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara, this is a hot new region. Extreme diurnal temperature shifts yield ripe fruit, but the cool nights allow for a freshness and acidity in the grapes. This is a contrast to say Paso Robles, where the night time temperatures persist into the 80s and above. As a result, Paso wines show more dried fruit, baked flavors, and higher alcohol. Happy Canyon wines show a more elegant and graceful harmony of fruit and acid balance.
Antonio Galloni has this to say about the Santa Barbara region, "..with few exceptions, these wines remain under the radar and very fairly priced relative to global peers".
The Martellotto "Riserva" 2016 was in barrel for 14 months. The barrel aging led to a wine that has developed incredible depth of flavors, and an intoxicating nose. The 2016 version is soft, fruity, and lively. As with most of the Martellotto wines, artful blending is the key to success. The wine is a Bordeaux blend of 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Malbec.
"Il Capoccia" means "Bossman" in Southern Italy. The wine is bottled in a heavy gauge bordeaux bottle that gives it an air of gravitas. If you are lucky enough to grab a bottle of this wine, it will impress you and surprise the Napa and Bordeaux lover too.
