About the Wine

Conn Creek has been Napa’s master of Bordeaux-style wines since 1973. Founded by wine pioneers Bill and Kathy Collins, Conn Creek helped shape Napa’s rise to stardom as a premier wine region. Over 40 years later, they’re still focused on what Napa does best: exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux varietals.

The 2017 Chiles Valley Cabernet is part of Conn Creek’s AVA Series, a tribute to Napa’s rare sub-regions, like Chiles Valley, where Conn Creek sources the very best fruit to showcase Napa’s diversity.

So, what’s special about Chiles Valley? It’s one of Napa’s hidden gems, officially recognized as California’s 81st AVA, with a unique microclimate and 800-foot elevation that give its wines unforgettable character. Just east of Rutherford, this 6,000-acre area is home to only 1,000 vineyard acres and a handful of wineries, including Green & Red, Volker Eisele, Nichelini, RustRidge—and, of course, Conn Creek.

Guiding this expression of Chiles Valley is winemaker Tom Montgomery. With a B.S. in enology and viticulture from Fresno State, Tom’s career began in California’s Central Valley. Over the years, he’s earned a stellar reputation for producing award-winning wines in both Napa and Sonoma Valleys. A true outdoorsman, Tom brings the same passion to his wines as he does to exploring the West’s mountains and trails.

The 2017 Chiles Valley Cab is packed with bold, dark fruit—think blackberry and black cherry—balanced by hints of spice and a touch of earthiness. The finish? 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose and mouthfeel carry delicate red raspberry flavors that are intertwined with vanilla and cinnamon with a touch of earthiness on a soft core of tannins.

Critical Reviews

A warm and inviting expression of Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa's Chiles Valley, situated between 600 and 1,200 feet elevation, on the eastern side of the Vaca mountain range. It is a long, skinny valley rife with volcanic soils. That factor comes to life immediately with red earth aromatics, red currants, sweet tobacco, and dried sage. Full-bodied with sweet black currants fruits and more tobacco spice notes intertwined with cedar-rich tannins that are fine and granular, building on the long finish of turned earth, muddled bing cherry, rhubarb pie, and salty minerals. ~94 Decanter
