About The Wine

Domaine des Baumard is one of the Loire Valley’s most respected family estates, renowned for its pristine, mineral-driven expressions of Chenin Blanc. Based in Anjou, the Baumard family has crafted exceptional wines for generations, including historic holdings in Quarts de Chaume and Savennières. Their philosophy centers on precision: hand-harvesting, cool fermentations, and meticulous vineyard work that preserve purity, freshness, and terroir clarity.

The result is elegant, long-lived wines celebrated for their balance of richness and vibrant acidity.

Often called the greatest wine of the Loire Valley, Quarts de Chaume comes from a terroir unlike any other. Its wines deliver rare elegance and pedigree, with a texture that combines power and purity, richness and razor-sharp precision. Expect floral aromas layered with citrus and orchard fruit—complex, lifted, and unmistakably noble.

Quarts de Chaume is the most celebrated cru of Anjou, with a history dating back to the Middle Ages. Its name originates from the tax vignerons once paid to the Abbess of Ronceray: a “quarter” of the harvest from the sun-drenched slopes of Chaume. Harvest is entirely manual, done through multiple selective passes in October. Grapes are picked berry by berry at perfect ripeness and placed gently in shallow crates to preserve their condition before being pressed whole-cluster in a pneumatic press.

The 2018 vintage was exceptional for growing quality wine in the Loire Valley. A warm growing season with plenty of water made for large quantities of healthy grapes. The Loire Valley is known for its fine-grained limestone, known as tuffeau soil. In fact, most of the well-known and visited castles in this valley are built with this stone.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Golden yellow color. A nose of orange marmalade, dried fruits, quince, and linden honey. The palate is youthful yet incredibly harmonious and seductive, with delicate sweetness balanced by remarkable freshness. All the elements of a great sweet wine are here. ~ 97 Gilbert & Gaillard

The freshness of Loire Chenin Blanc is so apparent in this wine that balances honey and ethereal acidity. The wine is delicious, but really young and deserves to develop. Drink from 2025. ~ 94 Wine Enthusiast

Aromas of baked pears, green apples, sage and thyme. Medium-bodied with charming sweetness. Supple and bright with a solid core of candied berries and fresh flowers. Honey and almond skin. Lovely length here too. Seriously tasty. Drink or hold. ~ 94 James Suckling
