About The Wine

Bibi Graetz did not just enter the world of wine; he staged a creative coup. Born into a family of artists at the medieval Castello di Vincigliata, Bibi swapped his paintbrush for ancient vines, releasing his first vintage in 2000 with zero formal training and a total disdain for convention. Today, he isn't just a winemaker—he is a visionary iconoclast who has redefined the Italian landscape.

Colore is the absolute apex of the Bibi Graetz pyramid. It is the ultimate expression of his dream and the rarest jewel in his crown. While Testamatta is his celebrated icon, Colore is the legendary "selection of the selection," born only from the most exceptional barrels of the entire production. What began as a mythical micro-lot of 600 bottles has evolved into one of the world's most sought-after fine wines. As the legendary critic Jane Anson declared in her 100-point review, Colore is "jewel-like... so distinctive and so unlike many other Super Tuscans."

This is 100% Sangiovese taken to its most extreme and sublime form. Sourced from the oldest, most prestigious pre-phylloxera-style vineyards in Tuscany—some reaching 135 years of age—the fruit is a miracle of survival. These vines are rooted in the poorest, most punishing galestro soils of Lamole, Vincigliata, and Siena, where high altitudes and stony earth force the grapes to produce a wine of haunting intensity and "ancient taste." The dedication is obsessive: each vineyard is harvested up to eight separate times to ensure every single berry is captured at the precise moment of perfection.

2019 isn't just any Colore. It's the bottle that marks twenty years of one of Italy's most-collected winemakers, the one he calls "monumental" and where critics handed out 99 from James Suckling and 98 from Decanter, calling it "a real showstopper" and "old-vine magic." For a serious Tuscan cellar, this is a once-a-decade kind of bottle.

What makes Colore different is the fruit. The 2019 is 100% Sangiovese drawn from just three vineyard sites — Lamole and Vincigliata in the heart of Chianti Classico, plus the southern parcel of Poggio Matto in Casciano del Murlo (Siena) — with vines that are 70, 80, and 90 years old.

Each parcel is harvested up to eight separate times to catch every cluster at peak ripeness, fermented with native yeasts in open-top barriques, then aged for 20 months in new French oak. It's the kind of obsessive, parcel-by-parcel approach you usually see in grand cru Burgundy.

Wrapped in Bibi’s own hand-painted artwork, Colore is more than a Super Tuscan; it is the pinnacle of liquid art. This is the costliest, scarcest, and most profound effort from Italy’s most creative mind—a wine that doesn't just represent Tuscany, it transcends it.

100% Sangiovese.

Deep, focused ruby with a violet rim. The nose is layered and unmistakably old-vine: blackberries, fresh and dried cherries, cassis, balsam herb, pressed rose petals, garden mint, and a striking note of crushed stone and softly-spiced licorice.

The palate is full-bodied and tightly wound — saturated red and black fruit framed by polished, ultra-fine tannins and bright Sangiovese acidity that keeps the whole frame lifted.

Saline minerality, mountain-herb finish, and a tail of dried flowers that lingers. Monumental now with hours of decanting; built to evolve through 2040+

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This is so perfumed and seductive, with blackberries, cherries, dried flowers and perfume. It's full-bodied and tight with very fine tannins. Really structured and long. Superb tannin texture. So fine, yet so powerful. This is an incredible combination of fruit and structure. Old-vine magic. Drink after 2026. ~99 James Suckling

The 'dream' in Italian, this is from very old, high-altitude vineyards on stony soils mixed with sand and stone. This is one of the wines of the tasting, a real showstopper that captures your interest and holds it all the way. Red cherries and strawberries dominate the nose with softly-spiced liquorice touches. But it's the texture that's so captivating, gripping straight away and holding you there, but in a soft and gentle way. Bright acidity comes in keeping things fresh and welcoming while the structure and length give a lovely roundness. A real success. ~98 Decanter

Dressed for a party, the Bibi Graetz 2019 Colore celebrates the estate's 20th anniversary with a special commemorative (2000-2019) bottle. This vintage of Colore is 100% Sangiovese (the small part of Colorino in the blend we saw last year has been removed) because Bibi thought the Sangiovese elegant enough to stand alone. Fruit comes from three vineyard sites with 70-, 80- and 90-year-old vines, respectively. The wine offers big intensity and beautifully lifted aromas and more textural support than we saw in the slightly thinner 2018 vintage. The bouquet reveals balsam herb, cassis, pressed rose, garden mint and crushed stone. Fruit from the southern-most site, Poggio Matto in Casciano del Murlo (in the province of Siena), was blended in at a greater percentage to help build the structure and momentum of this cellar-worthy wine. ~96 Robert Parker's, Wine Advocate
