About The Wine

The Catena family didn't just put Argentine wine on the map — they drew the map. Four generations, 120+ years, the pioneers of high-altitude viticulture in Mendoza, and one of the most decorated wine families on Earth. Their flagship Adrianna Vineyard is the first South American vineyard ever to earn 100 points from Robert Parker.

This is their Cabernet love letter to Agrelo, the single historic appellation in Luján de Cuyo that put Mendoza Cabernet on the radar long before Malbec became a household word.

The 2019 sources from Catena's family vineyards in Agrelo — 950 meters up at the foot of the Andes — where alluvial soils of clay, sand, and silt produce Cabernet with the structure of Napa, the savory edge of Bordeaux, and the freshness only high-altitude vineyards can deliver.

The 2019 vintage caught a near-perfect window: dry weather, a cool growing season, and yields slightly below average — exactly the conditions Cabernet loves. Catena's winemaking team — led by Dr. Laura Catena and Head Winemaker Alejandro Vigil — fermented the wine for 20 days, macerated another 10 days post-fermentation, then aged it 12 months in French oak (35% new). The result earned 93 points from James Suckling, 92 from Wine Advocate, and 92 from Vinous.

Pull this for a steak dinner, an Argentine asado, or any night when you want a serious Cabernet that drinks like it costs three times the price.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Deep purple with ruby red reflections. The nose opens with intense ripe red fruit — cassis, blackberry, and red plum — interwoven with black pepper, thyme, curry spice, and cedar. The palate is rich and layered, with cassis, clove, leather, and tobacco notes framed by fine-grained, robust tannins.

Fresh, mineral-driven acidity gives the wine remarkable lift, leading to a long, bright finish.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Lots of brambleberry and blackberry aromas with some currants and hints of fresh herbs. Full-bodied with layers of ripe fruit and firm tannins that give the wine depth and structure. Try after 2023, when it will soften slightly and show more beauty. ~ 93 James Suckling

The varietal 2019 Appellation Agrelo Cabernet Sauvignon is herbal and peppery, with fine-grained tannins and good freshness. It shows good ripeness and typicity and is fruit-driven and dry. 72,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2020. ~ 92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Agrelo is the characteristic area for cabernet sauvignon in Mendoza, and since the early 1990s, Catena has been one of the wineries that has made the best use of these alluvial soils and the abundance of sunshine in this place at the foot of the Andes in Luján de Cuyo. This Appellation offers a much fresher version than usual and shows mineral and fruity tones in the middle of a tense body with very good tannins that have grip but aren't aggressive. The acidity is strong enough to balance the ripeness of the red and black fruit flavors. ~ 92 Descorchados
