About The Wine

Chateau Angelus pedigree in a $26 bottle. Coralie de Bouard grew up on the grounds of Angelus — her father Hubert de Bouard is the man who re-created the estate into what it is today. She spent a decade working alongside him before buying this Montagne-Saint-Emilion property with her husband and renaming it to carry the family legacy forward. La Dame de Bouard is the second wine — the more approachable, earlier-drinking expression of the estate.

The 2019 vintage shows Coralie's intent: silky, gourmet, elegant. The blend is classic Right Bank — 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon — vinified parcel by parcel in traditional cement vats, with a portion done in barrel. Malolactic fermentation happens in French oak, then the wine rests in 50% new barrels for 18 to 24 months. The result is polished, energetic, and lush.

In the glass: layers of black cherry, plum, licorice, and chocolate, with a creamy, vibrant, fruity finish. Medium-bodied, soft, and forward — built for early drinking, but with the structure to hold a few years if you're patient. James Suckling scored it 90 points.

This is what happens when serious Bordeaux talent works in a less expensive appellation. You get the pedigree, the precision, the oak treatment — and you pay a quarter of what the famous family name costs in Saint-Emilion proper. $25.99 for a wine that drinks like it should cost $50.

THE PRODUCER

Chateau Clos de Bouard

Hubert de Boüard is co-owner and currently manages the estate. Michel Rolland serves as oenologist consultant. In 2018, co-owner Hubert de Bouard was charged with seeking to unfairly influence the outcome of the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé rankings in his favour. According to journalist Isabelle Saporta's research, Hubert de Boüard is judge and jury in the preparation of the classification. Château Clos de Boüard is a family history of the De Boüard family known for excellent mastery of winemaking processes. Hubert de Boüard de Laforest and Jean-Bernard Grenier are considered the 're-creators' of Château Angélus. Coralie de Boüard, daughter of Hubert de Boüard, was born on the grounds of Angelus and spent ten years working alongside her father there.
