About The Wine

This is the Saint-Estèphe sleeper that Bordeaux pros quietly stockpile when no one's watching.

Same family, same vineyard team, same uncompromising standards as next-door Chateau Montrose — but at a fraction of the price. The Bouygues brothers acquired Montrose in 2006 and grabbed Tronquoy-Lalande a few months later, then poured millions into transforming this property into one of Saint-Estèphe's true overachievers.

The 2019 caught a near-perfect window: a warm, dry summer with just enough freshness to keep things vibrant rather than heavy. Critics took notice — 94 points from James Suckling, 94 from Lisa Perrotti-Brown (formerly of Wine Advocate), 93 from Decanter, 92 from Jeb Dunnuck. The blend leans Merlot-forward at 50%, with 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot, aged 13 months in French oak (30% new).

Pull this for steak night, decant it for an hour, and you'll understand why people who know Left Bank Bordeaux drink Tronquoy and tell their friends to buy Lafite.

Built to drink beautifully today and reward patience through 2045.

A blend of 50% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Petit Verdot.

Deep garnet-purple in the glass. The nose opens with crème de cassis, stewed plum, and black cherry, layered with rose petal, sweet pipe tobacco, and a wisp of graphite.

Medium to full-bodied on the palate with ripe, finely-grained tannins, lively acidity, and a long earthy finish carrying notes of cedar, dark chocolate, crushed stone, and licorice.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This is really complex and perfumed, with an extremely attractive bouquet of flowers and dark fruit, such as currants. Full-bodied with crushed stones and chewy tannins, yet there's polish and sophistication to it. Serious bottle here. ~94 James Suckling

The 2019 Tronquoy-Lalande is made from 50% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it slowly unfurls to offer fragrant notes of rose oil, Indian spices, and licorice over a core of crème de cassis and stewed plums, plus a hint of lavender. The full-bodied palate is firm and sturdy, with grainy tannins and plenty of freshness to match the muscular fruit, finishing long and earthy. ~94 Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Savoury aspects to the nose here, black truffles and dark chocolate. Such a dark fruit profile — black plums, cherries, prunes, some fig, really majoring on the ripe black fruits with some treacle and coffee notes. Fine but grippy tannins also really take hold in the mouth producing quite a full style — dense and filling. An interesting, nuanced palate with just enough acidity to keep things fresh and balance the deep fruit profile. ~93 Decanter

As I wrote earlier this year, the 2019 Tronquoy-Lalande has turned out beautifully, and it continues to show very well, offering up inviting aromas of wild berries, spices, rose petals and cassis. Medium to full-bodied, layered and sensual, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a long, vibrant finish, it's reminiscent of a somewhat more sun-kissed and extroverted sibling of the terrific 2016 at this address. ~ 93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The deep purple-hued 2019 Chateau Tronquoy offers a powerful, medium to full-bodied, concentrated style that's going to reward cellaring. Giving up lots of red and black currant fruits as well as cedarwood, iron, and chocolaty aromatics, it has terrific overall balance, background oak, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's well worth seeking out and comes close to rivaling the 2018. ~92 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2019 Tronquoy-Lalande has a concentrated nose with quite intense black fruit, touches of boysenberry, a little richer than some of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with a dense, powerful, almost burly entry, very saline in the mouth, yet I am seeking more precision and finesse on the finish. That may well develop with time. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. ~ 92 Vinous Media

The wine is smooth with great black fruits and ripe tannins. It has structure that is buried in the ripeness of the wine. It will develop well, likely to be ready soon from 2025 and then rest at the same level of maturity. ~ 92 Wine Enthusiast

Fresh and direct, with a core of plum and boysenberry notes backed by a hint of roasted apple wood. Features flashes of anise and warm earth throughout. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2030. ~ 91 Wine Spectator
