Savennières located in the Loire Valley is a small and charming appellation that’s focused mainly on producing wines made with Chenin Blanc. This under-the-radar appellation is finally waking up the interest of major wine critics, consumers, and pros who are realizing the extraordinary potential that this region has to give.

Decanter said, quality is high to exceptional across this small appellation, and yet, it is still little known, even in France. It has a good reputation but in a very small circle.”

Domaine Fournier Longchamps (FL) is located in Rochefort sur Loire in Maine-et-Loire, very close to the Loire River and about 9 miles from the medieval town of Angers. The Domaine was founded by Philip Fournier Longchamps in 2006, and in 2009, Julien, Philip’s son took over the reins of the estate.

The estate is made up of more than 100 acres located in some of the most respected appellations in the Loire Valley like Savennières, Roche aux Moines, Anjou, Coteaux du Layon, and Chaume. Since 2009, the vineyard is managed with organic and biodynamic viticulture, wherepassion and respect for wine and terroir are key on each of the cuvées.”

The wine, called Le Parc, is crafted on a unique terroir of volcanic rhyolite rock with a sandy loam surface. This special soil drains exceptionally well and encourages low vine vigor, leading to high-quality grapes. Le Parc is a refined wine, ideal for aging, that perfectly showcases the minerality and elegance that Savennières is celebrated for.

100% Chenin Blanc. Light yellow, brilliant reflections. Notes of apple and quince. Aromas of ripe stone fruits and fresh citrus fruits.

An austerely stony Savennieres that reminds me of how the wines of this appellation tasted back in the 1980s. But there’s more power here than there was back then, and it really helps this wine carry its weighty load of crushed-stone character. I love the touch of gunflint on the nose and at the very long, crystalline finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. ~94 James Suckling

Brilliant yellow. Fresh, expressive nose, fruity and mineral notes. Intense attack, a rich, full wine, fine-grained oak, powerful. Spicy aftertaste, perceptible acidity. A sterling wine, deliciously drinkable with salmon in puff pastry. Drink now. ~93 Gilbert & Gaillard
