About the Wine
Château de Francs, nestled in the heart of the prestigious Francs Côtes de Bordeaux, is a true gem with a story that reflects the passion and expertise of its co-owners, Hubert de Bouard (Château Angélus) and Dominique Hébrard (former of Cheval Blanc).
Acquired in the mid-1980s, this 37-hectare estate has rapidly become one of the most sought-after names in Bordeaux, thanks to its meticulous vineyard management and world-class winemaking. The estate’s vineyards are predominantly planted to Merlot (70%), with smaller portions dedicated to Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, ensuring a perfect balance of power, finesse, and complexity.
The top cuvée, Les Cérisiers, is crafted with around 90% Merlot, offering an elegant yet intense wine that captures the essence of this exceptional terroir. Aged in French oak barrels, with 50% new oak, Les Cérisiers delivers a wine of depth and structure, with vibrant red and black fruit, fine tannins, and refreshing acidity. It’s a wine that impresses now, but will only improve with time.
Château de Francs is a must-have for anyone looking for high-quality Bordeaux wines that combine tradition, innovation, and extraordinary value. Don't miss the chance to add this standout wine to your collection.
Aging: 12 to 18 months. 1/3 new barrels and 2/3 second use.
Tasting Notes
90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc. The 2020 Château de Francs Les Cerisiers is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, offering a vibrant mix of red and black fruits like blackcurrants, raspberries, and redcurrants. The wine has a fresh, medium-bodied profile with fine tannins and refreshing acidity, highlighted by subtle earthy notes, sweet spices, and a hint of chocolate. Its slate-like texture and lively finish give it structure and punch, while the fruit remains bright and crunchy. Well-balanced and with great aging potential, this wine is both approachable and complex.
Critical Reviews
The 2020 Francs les Cerisiers has a pleasing, quite saline nose with ground stone infusing the mainly black fruit. Nice energy conveyed here. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black and red fruit, fine tannins, well-judged acidity with a lively fresh finish. What a joyful wine. Recommended. ∼91 Neal Martin, Vinous Media
Aromas of blackcurrants, chocolate nibs and sweet spices with an earthy character to it. Medium-bodied with firm, lightly dusty tannins and a juicy red and blue berry character. Refreshing and solid in the finish. Drink or hold. ∼91 James Suckling
Slate texture is clear straight from the go on Les Cerisiers this year, plenty of raspberry, redcurrant fruits, clear austerity but will soften over ageing, and there is great value to be had. Tension but also structure and punch. ∼91 Decanter
A charming, medium-bodied effort, the 2020 Château De Francs Les Cerisiers gives up lots of ripe red cherry and redcurrant fruits as well as notes of sandalwood, spice, and dried flowers. It’s balanced and has outstanding length as well as plenty of potential. ∼91 Jeb Dunnuck
Deep purple-black in color, the 2020 Les Cerisiers comes skipping out of the glass with cheery notes of kirsch, raspberry coulis and plum preserves and plush hints of cinnamon toast and mossy tree bark. The medium to full-bodied palate is laden with bright, crunchy red and black fruits, framed by ripe, rounded tannins and bold freshness, finishing perfumed. ∼91 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
Medium-bodied, spicy red fruits with floral accents are all over the place here in this medium-bodied, sweet and savory, chewy red berry filled wine. There is a nice touch of crushed rocks in the finish. Drink from 2023-2034. ∼90 Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider
