Let’s talk Pauillac—home to Bordeaux’s most iconic names. This is the land of classified growths, legendary estates, and bottles that make collectors swoon. But nestled amidst these titans lies a truly rare find: Château Haut de la Bécade, an 19-acre jewel that’s remained in the Rainaud family for nearly a century. In a world dominated by big-name châteaux and corporate holdings, Haut de la Bécade stands out as a bastion of artisanal winemaking.
Producing just 600 cases a year, this estate flies under the radar. But savvy wine lovers know that its exceptional location—surrounded by seven Grand Cru Classé neighbors—places it on hallowed ground. From Lynch-Bages to Latour, Mouton Rothschild to Pichon Baron, these titans form the estate's extraordinary 2-mile radius.
Sitting proudly atop the highest point in Pauillac, a modest 11 meters above sea level, Château Haut de la Bécade’s vineyards thrive on gravelly soils—ideal for crafting elegant, structured, and age-worthy wines. The vines, averaging over 35 years in age, draw deep into this terroir, producing fruit with unparalleled depth and complexity.
The Rainaud family’s meticulous care, honed over seven generations, ensures every vintage reflects their legacy of quality and respect for the land. If you’re looking for authenticity, this is it.
Why It’s Special? It’s all about location, location, location. Think of Haut de la Bécade as the well-kept secret in a neighborhood of legends. This estate doesn’t rely on flashy branding or sky-high prices—it lets the terroir do the talking. And trust us, with neighbors like Mouton Rothschild and Pichon Lalande, the terroir speaks volumes.
Rarely do you find a Pauillac wine that delivers this level of finesse at such an approachable price. This is Pauillac without pretense—a wine for those who appreciate the finer things but don’t need to shout about it.
With only 600 cases produced, Château Haut de la Bécade is as exclusive as it gets.
2020 was a great year for Bordeaux. Vinous Media blessed this year with a 97-point review and said, "Two thousand-twenty is an exceptional vintage for Bordeaux, certainly the best in the 2018-2020 trilogy. Quality is very, very high."
Aging: 18-20 months in French Oak.
70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc. Displays classic Pauillac aromas of lovely cassis and gravelly stone. Dark violet in color expressing a youthful hue. The medium acidity reflects its ability to continue to age with a backbone. This medium to full-bodied wine shows good clay and mineral-granite character along the length of the palate; while being encased in red currant and violet essence. This wine will continue to get better over the next 10 years.
Beautiful nose of blackberries, black cherries, cloves, black pepper, and a little dark chocolate. The wine has a compelling intensity of bramble fruits on the palate, energetic, and mouth filling, with elegance and finesse. Juicy, long finish.~95 Decanter
