About the Wine

The estate traces back to at least the mid-19th century (it was originally called Domaine du Gay).  Since 1985, Catherine Péré-Vergé has been the owner of Château Le Gay, located in the Pomerol appellation. She succeeded the Robin sisters, who managed the small 6-hectare estate for 60 years.

Like the Robin sisters, Catherine Péré-Vergé sought to capture the true character of the region, focusing on quality over quantity.

Château le Gay is a leading Bordeaux wine estate in Pomerol, producing Merlot-based wines. Its reputation has risen steadily in the new millennium and has garnered high ratings from critics, including a score of 99 for the 2010 vintage from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

Recognized by Le Guide Hachette des Vins with both 2 Stars (2024) and 1 Star (2023) distinctions, and awarded a Silver Medal at the Concours de Bordeaux Vins d’Aquitaine (2022), it stands as one of the estate’s most celebrated releases.

Today, Château Le Gay spans 10.5 hectares, planted mostly with Merlot, the signature grape of the appellation, and a smaller portion of 40-year-old Cabernet Franc vines rooted in clay and gravel soils. Harvesting is done by hand, and the wines are aged for 18 months in French oak barrels.

2020 Château Le Gay captures Pomerol’s signature elegance with vibrant fruit and polished structure. Wine Enthusiast describes it as “a fine, fruity wine that has a light touch of acidity to boost the black-currant fruits. It has a fresh character along with gentle tannins. Drink from 2024.”

Tasting Notes

90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc

Deep purple-black colored, the 2020 Le Gay erupts from the glass with scents of molten licorice and dark chocolate, giving way to a tantalizing core of baked black cherries, prunes, and blackberry preserves, plus a hint of cardamom.

The full-bodied palate is rich and decadent, featuring layers of black fruits and exotic spices with a firm yet velvety texture and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length.

Reviews

So much black mushroom to the dark fruit, such as blackberries and brambleberries. Extremely aromatic. Full-bodied, yet refined and polished, with lovely tannins and fantastic typicity and complexity. It’s so multidimensional and structured, yet there’s a weightless character and personality to it. Thought-provoking and sophisticated. Real Pomerol.  ~ 98 James Suckling

Full-bodied, concentrated, powerful, and rich, this beauty pops with licorice, smoke, flowers, roses, espresso, plums, and chocolate in the nose. The wine is bold, intense, and at the moment, slightly reticent, so give it a few years before popping a cork and you will be amply rewarded with layers of ripe, sweet, earthy plums, blackberries, black cherries, truffle, and chocolate. ~ 96 The Wine Cellar Insider

The 2020 Le Gay was an impressive Pomerol when tasted from barrel. Now, in bottle, it has a wonderful, exquisitely defined bouquet with perfumed blackberry and briary, incense and light pencil lead aromas. It's quite understated for Le Gay, yet blossoms in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with quite grainy tannins. Well-balanced, fresh, hints of licorice and brine towards a very saline finish. There is an edginess to this wine that I like, but it needs several years in bottle. ~ 95 Vinous Media

A surprisingly up-front, soft, almost mid-weight effort from this château, the 2020 Château Le Gay offers a pretty perfume of both red and black fruits as well as loads of flowers, spice, leafy herbs, and incense. Medium-bodied, balanced, and elegant on the palate, it has polished tannins, terrific balance, sweet oak, and outstanding length. This exceedingly elegant, seamless beauty lacks the density and concentration of the top wines in the vintage but is nevertheless a gorgeous, classic Pomerol that will evolve for two decades. ~ 94 Jeb Dunnuck

Somewhat open in the fragrance. Undergrowth, fir resin, ripe cherry. In the mouth, there is a somewhat oily texture, overlaid with a grainy, dry tannin freight, restrained acidity, but good juiciness, tightly grip on the finish, with medium fruit. A punchy wine with potential.~ 94 Falstaff

~ 93 Wine Independent

The 2020 Le Gay will appeal to readers who appreciate this estate's unabashedly modern, demonstrative style. Offering up rich aromas of dark berries, plum liqueur, coconut, and creamy new oak, it's full-bodied, broad and unctuous, with a sweet core of ripe fruit, richly extracted tannins, and a broad, heady, vanillin-inflected finish. It's a well-made effort in its style, even if the site is surely capable of more. ~ 92 Robert Parker

THE PRODUCER

Château le Gay

Château le Gay is a leading Bordeaux wine estate in Pomerol, producing Merlot-based wines. Its reputation has risen steadily in the new millennium, and has garnered high ratings from critics, including a score of 99 for the 2010 vintage from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

There are 10.5 hectares (26 acres) of vines in one holding, planted on clay and gravel soils in the north of the Pomerol plateau. Some 90 percent of plantings are Merlot, with the remainder Cabernet Franc. Château le Gay counts Lafleur and La Croix de Gay among its neighbors.

The grand vin is made from vines that are at least 40 years old. A second wine, Château Manoir de Gay, is also produced, from younger, higher-yielding vines planted in 2006.
