About The Wine

Chateau Léoville Barton dates back almost 200 years of Bordeaux history. Classified as a 2nd Grand Cru Classé in 1855, this legendary estate resides in the prestigious terroir of Saint Julien, nestled within the enchanting Médoc region.

After the French Revolution, Hugh Barton, an Irish merchant of Bordeaux wines, fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a Bordeaux owner. In 1821, he acquired the vineyards of the "Langoa" estate, renaming it "Chateau Langoa Barton." Drawn to the captivating architecture, elegant façade, and harmonious proportions, Hugh Barton fell in love with the building long before the famous 1855 classification.

In 1826, Hugh Barton seized the opportunity to purchase a quarter of the former Léoville estate. The domain had faced its collapse due to the French Revolution and a complex inheritance settlement. In acquiring what would later become Léoville Barton, Hugh acquired only the vineyards, as he already possessed the necessary winemaking facilities at Langoa. The Barton family takes immense pride in being the longest-standing winemaking family in Bordeaux, alongside Mouton-Rothschild.

Within the 124-acre of vineyards of Chateau Léoville Barton, old vines thrive in gravelly soils with clay subsoil, ensuring exceptional quality. The vineyard is planted with 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc.

2020 is an outstanding vintage for Saint-Julien. Vinous Media blessed this year with a 97-point review and said, "An exceptional vintage for Bordeaux, certainly the best in the 2018-2020 trilogy. Quality is very, very high."

Aging: 12 months in 60% new French oak.

What the Critics Said

The 2020 Leoville Barton has a deep garnet-purple color. It is incredibly primary and youthful with expressive scents of crème de cassis, ripe juicy plums, and black raspberries, opening out to hints of vanilla pod, coffee, star anise, and tilled soil. Medium-bodied, the palate is beautifully restrained, with lovely tension and firm, very fine-grained tannins, finishing so long and achingly graceful. Wow!~98 The wine Indepentent

The flagship from this great chateau, the 2020 Chateau Léoville Barton checks in as 85.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14.5% Merlot that saw 60% new French oak. It has fabulous aromatics of crème de cassis, graphite, liquid violets, spring flowers, and background oak. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, its purity of fruit is just about off the chart, it has a great mid-palate, and enough tannins to warrant 7-8 years of bottle age. This is another sensational wine from this team that will have 30-40 years of overall longevity. ~97+ Jeb Dunnuck

The wine shows both elegance and great richness. It is a poised and ripe wine, full of impressive black fruits and generous tannins. The fine structure gives considerable potential for the long term. ~96WE

Aromas of dark berries, ash, tar, blackcurrants, and lead pencil, following through to a medium to full body, with firm and integrated tannins and a medium, chewy finish. Needs four to six years to soften and come together. Very tight and nicely structured. ~96 James Suckling

The 2020 Léoville Barton is compelling. It offers up a gorgeous mix of vintage 2020 intensity married to the classicism Léoville-Barton have come to expect. Blackberry, graphite, dried herbs, menthol and dark spice abound. Whereas so many Saint-Juliens are exuberant in 2020, Léoville-Barton is very much buttoned up, showing just a twinkle of mischief that lets you know the best is yet to come. ~96 Vinous

A bold, strapping young wine, with vivid plum, cassis, kirsch and black licorice notes that meld steadily as they cruise through, carried by a bolt of graphite and finishing with a flourish of violet, anise and apple wood. Mouthwatering in the end. Built for the cellar. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. ~96 Wine Spectator
