About The Wine

CVNE (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) is Rioja royalty. The bodega was founded in 1879 in Haro — the town where modern Rioja was born — and five generations of the same family have been running it ever since. When critics talk about the great houses of Spain, this is one of the names that comes up every time.

Real de Asúa is their flagship. Named after the founding brothers, this is the wine CVNE makes when they want to show the world what their best vineyard can do. Since 2018, every bottle comes from one single plot: Carromaza, a 2.37-hectare site in the village of Villalba, 600+ meters up in Rioja Alta. The vines are 30 years old, head-trained, hand-harvested, and protected from Atlantic weather by the Sierra de Cantabria mountains. The 2020 vintage was fresh and cool — the kind of year that produces Rioja with real elegance rather than heavy ripeness.

Here's what makes this bottle a big deal: James Suckling gave it 97 points and said only one 2020 Rioja in the entire region scored higher. Decanter matched it at 97. Wine Advocate came in at 96+. Production is tiny — about 1,200 cases worldwide — and CVNE sells this wine on La Place de Bordeaux alongside the world's most coveted labels. Almost none of it reaches the U.S.

If you've never tried a top-tier single-vineyard Rioja, this is the bottle that shows why collectors get excited about the category. It has the structure to age a decade or more, but it drinks beautifully right now with a proper decant.

100% Tempranillo from the Carromaza vineyard. Deep ruby to the edge of the glass, with aromas that jump out — blackberry, dark cherry, violets, orange peel, vanilla, and dark chocolate. The palate is where this wine earns its scores: fine, polished tannins frame juicy acidity and layered flavors of crushed raspberry, licorice, mocha, and fresh cedar. Full-bodied but balanced, with a savory mineral finish that keeps going. Aged 12 months in new and second-use French oak barriques.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Such purity and clarity to the wine with blackberries, blackcurrants, violets and orange peel. Medium to full body and fine tannins. Polished, bright, vivid and agile. Powdery tannins with wonderful length and finesse. Savory, too. Give it three to four years of bottle age. ~97 James Suckling

The second release on the Place de Bordeaux of this 'more modern' wine from the established Spanish winery, made from the 2.37ha plot of 30-year-old Tempranillo grapes known as Carromaza in the village of Villalba, 700m high in Rioja Alta. From the fresh and cool 2020 vintage, this is intensely fragrant, verging on heady aromatics on the nose; baked plum, strawberries and soft aniseed, cinnamon and clove spices. ~97 Decanter

The 2020 Real de Asúa is a wine that changed in 2018 when it started being produced exclusively with Tempranillo from the lieu-dit Carromaza in the village of Villalba. 2020 was warm, and the grapes were picked two weeks earlier than in 2019. The grapes are harvested in 300-kilo palot containers and fermented after a cold soak in small oak vats with indigenous yeasts. Malolactic was in French oak barrels, and the aging was in new and second-use barriques and lasted 12 months. This feels quite classical, balanced and serious. The nose is subtle, elegant and quite impressive, with notes of herbs and a touch of mustard; it's fresh and well above the expectation from a year like 2020. ~96+ Wine Advocate
