About The Wine

The Gaja family landed in Piemonte from Spain in the 17th century. Following WWII, Giovanni Gaja acquired large vineyard holdings in the area.

His son, Angelo, is considered one of the pioneers of modern winemaking in Italy. After studying wine in Montpellier, he was one of the first to bring French techniques such as barrique barrel aging, malolactic fermentation, and modern technical innovations. By raising the level and recognition of Nebbiolo, Angelo Gaja has been commended by every major wine publication in the world and acknowledged as an innovator.

Today, his two daughters Gaia and Rossana manage the extensive land holdings and global distribution of this important brand.

Gaja oversees 100 hectares of prime Piedmont vineyards, producing 18 different wines rooted in the region’s greatest grapes—Nebbiolo, Barbera, and a handful of carefully chosen French varieties. Under visionary leadership, the estate has evolved into one of Italy’s most influential producers, achieving global prestige on par with icons like Château Lafite Rothschild and Champagne Krug.

A massive, tightly wound powerhouse—dark, dense, and unmistakably Serralunga. Layers of black cherry, graphite, scorched earth, tobacco, and smoldering incense push through with slow, reluctant force.

The palate is muscular and unyielding, driven by iron-grip tannins and a deep mineral core. Bold, brooding, and built for the long haul, this is a wine that demands patience and rewards those willing to wait.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Forward and lifted, this Barolo boasts blackberries, plums, thyme, rosemary, clove, and allspice. Elegant yet powerful, the lush palate is dominated by juicy blackberries and cherries, while savory earth notes emerge on the lengthy finish, supported by ultra-fine tannins. A mouth-filling and substantial wine with captivating depth. Drink from 2026. ~ 98 Wine Enthusiast

"Sperss" means "nostalgia." Sourced from Serralunga d'Alba, this wine is a beast—dark, spicy, and full of tar and roses. It captures the sheer power of Serralunga with Gaja's signature polish. ~ 98 Orazio Campolli

Showing the power and the contoured definition that is typical of Serralunga d'Alba, the Gaja 2020 Barolo Sperss is a wine of greater brawn and intensity. Yet its power remains elegantly in line with the character of the vintage that is ultimately more subdued compared to 2019 or the upcoming 2021. It offers a complete photograph of its territory with rusty ferrous notes, orange peel, dark fruit and licorice. There is a fun end note of dark Amarena cherry to conclude. That hint of sweetness ties into elegantly chalky tannins. ~ 97 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Very spiced with deep, dark earth and forest aromas of black truffles, bark, mushrooms, licorice and iodine. Full-bodied and very reserved, with a linear and racy palate that goes on for minutes. Gunpowder highlights to the dark fruit and forest floor character. Structured. Try after 2028. ~97 James Suckling

Reduced aromas are earthy, with flashes of cherry and raspberry fruit. The flavors are fresh and lively, with fine precision and a tightly wound structure boosting the notes of cherry, raspberry, iron, tobacco and underbrush. The excellent length on the mineral-infused finish indicates this wine's future potential. Best from 2029 through 2050. 400 cases imported. ~ 96 Wine Spectator

Bright, rich ruby with a fine garnet shimmer. Finely drawn nose with a fresh fruit component of cranberries and crunchy cherries, some cardamom. Plucky, full-bodied tannins characterise the palate, dark fruit component, full-bodied and salty finish. ~ 96 Falstaff

Sperss is derived from the MGAs of Marenca and Rivette, both in the heart of Serralunga. Fermentation is in stainless steel tanks, and ageing is divided between barriques and large oak barrels. The 2020 presents floral and restrained wild strawberry aromas, with tobacco and graphite mineral notes. The tannins are dense, tense but ripe, imbued with orange peel to the refreshing finish. ~95 Decanter
