About the Wine
Decanter stamped 2020 Brunello with a 4/5 vintage rating, calling it fresh, seductive, and instantly satisfying. And among the standouts? Le Ragnaie is delivering one of the prettiest, most mineral-driven wines of the year.
At Le Ragnaie, every bottle showcases the harmony and elegance of Sangiovese within Brunello’s terroir. The focus is on crafting refined wines from the Sangiovese Grosso variety.
Le Ragnaie owns some of the highest altitude vineyards in all of Montalcino. This unique terroir allows them to craft wines that radiate elegance and finesse. From grape to glass, Le Ragnaie's process is infused with passion and precision. With every step, from vine nurturing to meticulous selection and artisanal winemaking, the essence of the land and the creator's vision is captured in each bottle.
Established in 2002 by owner and winemaker Riccardo Campinoti, Le Ragnaie oversees 38 acres of high-altitude vineyards meticulously situated in the Montalcino region, gracing Riccardo's wines with a distinctive complexity. Their lands are cultivated with vineyards and olive groves, following the guidelines of Organic Agriculture, and are located in three distinct areas of the Montalcino district.
The unique high elevation vineyards allow the grapes to retain freshness and help combat the warming effects of climate change. As the Wine Advocate puts it, “Le Ragnaie has become a symbol of contemporary Brunello in which elevations matter more than ever as a tool against climate change.” Le Ragnaie also embodies a commitment to sustainable farming practices, ensuring each vineyard reflects its unique terroir.
At Casanovina Montosoli Vineyard, atop the Santa Fiora Unit – Sillano Formation, history speaks louder still. Dating back to the Cretaceous Sup. – Paleocene age, these soils, dressed in gray-brown clays and calcilutites, harbor ancient secrets. Shallow to moderately deep, they boast a calcareous skeleton of varying sizes and shapes, including the unique lamellar marl type. With clay textures and a pH leaning towards the alkaline, they bear witness to time itself, in every sip. This is the essence of Casanovina Vineyards.
Aging: 36 months in large Slavonian oak barrels
Tasting Notes
100% Sangiovese Grosso.
Wild strawberry and crushed red berries snap out of the glass, chased by violet, thyme blossom, a flicker of truffle, and that signature Montosoli stony hit.
On the palate, it’s all tension and grace: medium-bodied, mineral-lined, and laser-focused, with bright acidity pushing tart forest fruit, blood orange, and savory herbs across a long, mouthwatering finish.
The tannins? Firm, fine, and perfectly coiled. This is high-altitude Brunello with attitude—precise, pretty, and built to go the distance.
Critical Reviews
Pouring a bright red color, the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli shows off a very pretty side of this vintage, with notes of wild strawberries, chili flake, dried earth, orange peel, and thyme. Medium-bodied, it's elegant and mineral-driven, with angular tannins, the most linear feel in the range, and an evenly tapering finish. It is not the most obvious wine in the range, but it may very well prove to be one of the best wines from Montosoli in 2020. Drink over 2027-2047 ~97-98 Jeb Dunnuck
The Le Ragnaie 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli (with 4,400 bottles created) comes from a celebrated site on the north side of the appellation at 300 meters in elevation. Montosoli is characterized by very special shale galestro clay soils that are brittle and friable. These conditions result in extremely focused aromatic characteristics of wet stone, blue flower, and blood orange. That note of violet or lavender is exceptional. The wine finishes with a salty note, and don't underestimate that firm tannic bite. Only eight Montalcino estates have access to fruit from Montosoli. ~97 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
Sitting just below Baricci’s holdings on the revered hill of Montosoli, Casanovina was the first of Le Ragnaie’s far-flung plots to be harvested, on 9 September. Impossibly pretty, it emerges with violet, thyme blossom, elusive hints of truffle, and an undeniable stony mineral note. The palate launches from a backdrop of small red forest berries, which are simultaneously sweet and tangy. Tannins are à point – firm and tightly woven, lending tautness and energy. ~ 95 Decanter
There's density to this red, which lends a feeling of weight and power matched to lively acidity, providing tension and length. The combination is effective, leaving room for cherry, strawberry, blood orange, and hibiscus flavors. Ends with sapidity and pliable tannins. Best from 2027 through 2043. 520 cases made, 100 cases imported. ~ 94 Wine Spectator
The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli opens with an alluring bouquet that blends mentholated herbs and hints of camphor with crushed blackberries and a tinge of sour citrus. It's round and supple with dark red fruits and sweet inner herbal tones that ride a stream of fresh acidity. Fine tannins remain, yet the 2020 maintains fantastic freshness, finishing long with a resonance of licorice and tart blackberry that lingers on. ~94 Vinous Media
