The journey started in 1974, when a visionary industrial entrepreneur, Giuseppe (Pepito) Castiglioni, decided to take a small estate in Ruffoli and turn it into a world-class vineyard. With a keen eye for quality and an ambitious vision, Pepito quickly transformed Querciabella into one of Italy’s most pioneering wine producers. His love for fine wine and respect for terroir fueled the birth of some of Tuscany’s most remarkable bottles, and as the years went on, Querciabella became synonymous with elegance and richness.

After Pepito’s passing in 2003, his son Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni took the helm. Sebastiano brought new life to the winery with his commitment to organic viticulture and sustainability. It was under his leadership that Querciabella made a groundbreaking move in 2010, adopting plant-based viticulture. That commitment to a sustainable, eco-conscious approach is at the heart of every wine they produce, including the 2020 Batar Bianco.

Querciabella’s commitment to environmental conservation and animal rights is as strong as their dedication to creating world-class wines. The estate continues to evolve under the guidance of Mita Castiglioni, Pepito’s daughter, ensuring the legacy of quality and sustainability lives on. This wine was first made back in 1988, as the 2020 ‘Batar’ blends Pinot Bianco and Chardonnay. This was barrel-fermented in French oak for nine months before bottling. The wine comes off heady and intense with bright pear and starfruit notes alongside roasted hazelnuts and shades of baking spice dusted brioche. The palate is lithe and polished with a seamless texture. Very seamless throughout the drinking experience, coming off almost weightless, this is quite simply a joy to drink even so young. I have not tasted this wine in a while, and it's a delight to come back to it now. Compared to older vintages, I find this blend of equal parts Pinot Bianco and Chardonnay to be quite improved. The organic 2020 Batàr (with 20,000 bottles made) offers fresh, citrusy tones with lemon curd and candied peach. This barrique-aged white also offers mid-weight density and plenty of orchard fruit, saffron and light spice. It concludes with fresh acidity. ~93 Wine Advocate
The 2020 Batàr, Querciabella's Chardonnay/Pinot Blanc white, is laced with hints of tangerine oil, jasmine, spice and pear. Light tropical accents appear later, adding gorgeous nuance throughout.
