About The Wine

Abruzzo sits along the Adriatic, wedged between the Apennine peaks and the sea — a region that's been making Montepulciano for centuries but only recently started getting the respect it deserves. The grape here builds dense, dark fruit and chewy tannins without the price tag of Tuscany or Piedmont. Tor del Colle is the Botter family's tribute to that territory — named for the ancient ruins that still dominate the hillsides between L'Aquila and Bari, the label pulls fruit from three regions along the coast and bottles them under one roof. The family's been in the wine trade since 1928, starting with barrels and demijohns in Veneto and growing into a third-generation operation that now spans the Italian heel.

This 2020 Riserva is 100% Montepulciano, aged twelve months in wooden casks and another twelve in steel — enough time to smooth the tannins without erasing the grape's natural grip. The wine pours a bright cherry red with purple edges, opens with alpine strawberries, dark cherries, cinnamon, and a touch of liquorice, then hits the palate with ripe berry fruit and a distinctive spicy backbone. The tannins are present but rounded, the finish long and fruity.

At $19.99, this drinks like the $35-$40 Montepulciano you'd find at a wine shop trying to introduce you to the region. It's the kind of bottle that makes you wonder why you've been overpaying for softer, safer reds. Pull the cork tonight with grilled sausages or a slow-cooked ragu — it's built for food, priced for Tuesday, and deep enough to impress on Saturday.

THE PRODUCER

Tor del Colle

Tor del Colle is a label used for wines from Abruzzo, Molise and Puglia, three regions along the Adriatic Coast. The brand is owned by the Botter group who trace their origins to 1928 Venice. The brand name 'Tor del colle' is a tribute to the magnificence of the ruins between l'Aquila and Bari, which from their height could dominate the entire region. The brand aims to express the culture and unique culinary tradition of the Italian 'heel'. Casa Vinicola Botter was founded in 1928 in the Veneto region, 30 kms northeast of Venice, by Carlo Botter. The company began as a small business trading in local Veneto wines in barrels and demijohns. Carlo Botter purchased a small winery and a few acres of land in Veneto to start bottling wines from his own estate. The company is now run by the third generation Botter family.
