    About The Wine

"I find winemaking truly fascinating because, at its highest level, it requires a combination of technical and scientific expertise plus a level of artistic interpretation and instinct. It is humbling that, no matter how much you do, or how much you invest, you can only ever really control 50% of the variables that impact you." — Bart Araujo, owner and winemaker of Accendo Cellars.

That's not philosophy. That's humility. And it's the spine of the 2021.

Bart and Daphne Araujo sold Araujo Estate in 2013 to the Artemis Group. They could've retired. Instead, they built Accendo—a return to how Napa made great Cabernet in the '50s and '60s, when blending fruit across exceptional vineyard sites was the rule, not the exception. The team: Françoise Peschon (UC Davis, Haut-Brion, Stag's Leap), Nigel Kinsman, and Michel Rolland as consultant. These are people who've spent decades perfecting the craft.

The 2021 is their statement: 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc (the highest proportion yet), 2% Petit Verdot. Fruit from Vine Hill Ranch, Sleeping Lady Vineyard, Eco Tone, and Diamond Mountain—the Gold Coast of Napa's western bench. Aged 21 months in 65% new French oak.

This is what happens when you let the vineyard speak instead of imposing your will on it.

Black cherry, cassis, graphite, and wet slate layered with rose petal, new leather, and anise. The 2021 shows the highest proportion of Cabernet Franc in Accendo's portfolio (22%), which brings aromatic lift and floral perfume. Medium to full-bodied, with silky, fine-grained tannins that finish long and mineral-driven. Already harmonious; builds complexity through 2030 and beyond.

    CRITIC REVIEWS

    What the Critics Said

The flagship 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon was tasted out of bottle, and it might be the best yet. Deeply hued, it has an incredible array of black and blue fruits as well as leafy herbs, bouquet garni, graphite, and spicy oak that builds with time in the glass. Rich and full-bodied, it has a great mid-palate and incredible tannins. ~100 Jeb Dunnuck

Medium to full-bodied with compact black cherry, blackberry, and plum fruits laced with brown baking spices and a long, mineral-infused finish redolent of graphite and wet slate. An exceptional showing, balancing the intensity of the vintage with noticeable freshness. Best from 2025. ~99 Decanter

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine of total and exquisite finesse. Silky tannins wrap around a core of red/purplish fruit, mocha, spice, new leather and rose petals. By far the most elegant and understated wine yet from Accendo. It appears to have a brilliant future. ~98 Vinous Media

A focused, powerful yet polished Bordeaux-style blend that offers great depth of fruit, strong oak spices and a big mouthfeel. Made from 76% cabernet sauvignon, 22% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. The palate shows cocoa, graphite, iron, orange zest and deep blueberries. Two-thirds Oakville fruit. Aged in 65% new French oak for 21 months. Drinkable now, but best from 2030. ~98 James Suckling

Comprising fruit from Vine Hill Ranch, M-Bar Ranch and Ecotone Vineyard, Accendo's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon boasts stunning aromas of black cherries, cassis, dusty earth and dried spices. It's medium to full-bodied, texturally somewhere between silky and velvety, very fine and elegant, with a long, lingering finish. ~97 Wine Advocate
