About the Wine
Carte Blanch is a cult boutique winery in Napa Valley, founded in 2007 by Nicholas Allen. Nicholas was born and raised among wines and vines. In fact, his great-grandfather is none other than Clearance Dillon, owner of the iconic 1st Growth, Château Haut-Brion, and Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion.
Thanks to the passion and dedication that Nicholas has brought to Carte Blanch, this winery has quickly become a benchmark in the world for luxury and limited wines from Napa Valley.
Helen Keplinger is the chief winemaker and the mastermind behind the exclusive Carte Blanch wines. She completed her studies at the prestigious University of UC Davis; and subsequently, she acquired her expertise in Australia, Priorat, and the USA, where she worked at vineyards of the caliber of Paradigm Winery and Fiddlehead Cellars. In addition, she has learned from some of the best winemakers in the world like Michel Rolland. Helen was named “Winemaker of the Year” in 2012 by Food & Wine magazine, and in 2014 she was recognized by Wine Spectator magazine as a producer of “innovative and exciting” wines.
Carte Blanche wines are produced with a generations-long commitment to creating fine, limited, handcrafted wines. Carte Blanche Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is a top-tier, exclusive, and limited wine. This 100% Cab Sauvignon has earned the respect and admiration of some of the world's leading critics, and with 2x97 scores, this wine is a showstopper.
2021 is looking to be one of the vintages of the decade. Vinous Media blessed this year with a 95-98 point score, and said: "Two thousand twenty-one is a fabulous vintage in Napa Valley. That’s the good news. The not so good news is that production is down sharply, 30-50% in many cases. The wines have tremendous energy as well as finesse. In tasting, the 2021s show some of the savory intensity of other drought vintages – 2013 and 2014 come to mind – but with more aromatic explosiveness and greater inner sweetness."
Aging: 22 months in new oak barrels.
Tasting Notes: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Stunning color in the glass, an electrifying nose showcases black currants, cassis, cigar box, and red fruit. The palate is opulent, plush, and structured with integrated sweet tannins showcasing notes of dark blackberry, black cherry, and bittersweet chocolate dance through an everlasting and strong finish.
Reviews
Winemaker Helen Keplinger came here in 2014 and has consistently been making beautiful wines. The Carte Blanche 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Vineyard offers a pretty, medium to full-bodied, more elegant style as well as a terrific array of red, blue, and black fruits supported by floral and violet notes. It has perfectly integrated background oak, fine, polished tannins, and a great finish. It's incredibly impressive, and while it already has some appeal, it's going to evolve for 20 years in cold cellars. ~97 Jeb Dunnuck
The Carte Blanche 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper is a total dream. Sumptuous and racy with notes of blackberry jam, cloves, menthol, licorice and chocolate. The blend of three blocks and three clones (4, 144, and 337) is so complementary. The 2021 is magnificent. An archetype of modern Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 is super elegant, polished, and refined from start to finish, What a Knockout. ~97 Vinous Media
