About The Wine

Cimento is releasing its inaugural wines from estate vineyards in the Walla Walla Rocks District, and the 2021 Syrah from Le Mani Vineyard announces the arrival of a producer worth watching. Todd Alexander serves as winemaker, and the early critical response has been immediate: Jeb Dunnuck awarded the 2023 vintage a perfect 100 points, calling it "Cote Rotie-esque" in its refinement.

Sean Sullivan of Northwest Wine Report wrote that Cimento is "clearly reaching for the brass ring and, in its inaugural releases, already grasping it firmly in hand." This is the kind of debut that changes the conversation about Washington Syrah.

Le Mani Vineyard was planted in 2001 in the heart of the Rocks District, formerly known as River Rock Vineyard. The name honors the farm workers who tend the grapes by hand. The vineyard sits on the signature cobblestone soils that give the Rocks District its name and its character—iron-rich, heat-retaining stones that produce Syrah with a savory, mineral-driven intensity that rivals the Northern Rhone.

The 2021 vintage began with a June heat dome that brought three weeks of extreme temperatures. The early timing meant no compromised fruit, and once the heat broke, the season turned warm and even, with ideal September ripening weather. The result: fruit that held remarkable acidity and freshness despite the heat, with wines showing both depth and supple texture.

The Syrah underwent a 33-day maceration and was aged for 18 months in 30% new French oak. The wine opens with compelling floral aromatics layered over wet rock minerality, dark raspberry, and baking spice. On the palate, expect dried orange rind, black olive tapenade, and bacon fat—the kind of savory complexity that makes Washington Syrah so compelling. Owen Bargreen scored it 97 points; International Wine Report called it "intensely aromatic and deeply expressive."

This is the kind of wine that validates the hunt: a debut release from a serious producer, working estate fruit from one of Washington's most important AVAs, with critical acclaim already building.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

An intensely aromatic and deeply expressive wine. The nose immediately captivates with layers of black olive tapenade, charred earth, and smoked meat, interwoven with notes of crushed violets, cracked pepper, and wild herbs. On the palate, it is both powerful and graceful, showcasing a seamless balance between savory depth and vibrant acidity. Briny blackberries, roasted plum, and a whisper of dark cocoa unfold over a core of iron-rich minerality and beef jus. Velvety tannins frame the structure, leading to a remarkably long finish where hints of dried herbs and crushed rock linger. This masterfully crafted Syrah embodies the signature umami-laced complexity of the Rocks District, with the potential to evolve beautifully over the next two decades. Highly recommended. ~ 98 Interntional Wine Report

The 2021 Cimento Syrah underwent 10% whole cluster fermentation, The wine comes form the Le Mani Vineyard in the Rocks District. Stored in 33% new French oak for 18 months this delivers black olive tapenade and smoldering stone alongside Umami and bacon fat notes. The palate is refined and elegant with a smooth mouthfeel and wonderful stony character. The savory character and tart black fruits with beef drippings really adds to the enjoyment. ~ 97 Owen Bargreen

Meaty and umami-borne, this Syrah from the newly named Le Mani Vineyard is labelled as from The River Rock Estate Vineyard, but they are one and the same. It spends 18 months in 30% new French oak and unfurls a complexity of charred meat, black olives, and brine, framed by an undeniable dessicated violet tone. The palate is inky and savoury. With a river rock minerality that underscores smoky exotic spice, flourishes of dried orange peel, mace and a lush finish of smoky pancetta. ~ 95 Decanter

The 2021 Syrah River Rock Estate Vineyard is bright and focused in the glass with wet stone, violet and lavender tones giving way to citrus-laced blackberries. It's soft and pliant with ripe red berry fruit and sweet spice nuances accelerated by racy acidity. The 2021 finishes fresh with medium length and crunchy tannins, leaving the mouth watering for more. ~ 94 Vinous Media

THE PRODUCER

Cimento Orselli Estate

Cimento is an estate wine brand where 100% of the grapes are farmed from their own vineyards, with a firm belief that the world's greatest wines come from single-vineyard, estate-grown fruit.

The Orselli Estate Vineyard — planted on a former cherry orchard — is one of three estate sites in the legendary Rocks District of Milton-Freewater, Oregon, a region defined by its singular ancient cobblestone soil series unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Winemaker Todd Alexander crafts the wines with a deeply thoughtful, unhurried approach, firmly rooted in the belief that terroir is real — producing single-vineyard expressions of Grenache, Syrah, and other Rhône varieties that have earned world-class acclaim
