About The Wine

Colgin is a mailing-list wine.

Ann Colgin started this in 1992 with fruit from thirteen rows of the Herb Lamb vineyard. Helen Turley made the wine. David Abreu farmed it. Within a few vintages Colgin was one of the names that defined the California cult era. The winery went up in 2002 on Pritchard Hill, at the north end of IX Estate, above Lake Hennessey. In 2017 LVMH bought sixty percent. Colgin is the only American wine in their Vins d'Exception group, alongside Cheval Blanc and d'Yquem.

Jubilation is the newest wine they make. Allison Tauziet, Director of Winemaking since 2018, builds it from barrels across the three hillside sites that show early. Not lesser barrels. Earlier ones.

The 2021 is 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot. The fruit comes from IX Estate, Tychson Hill and Vine Hill Ranch. Twenty months in French oak. 14.9% alcohol.

Drought year, tiny berries, real concentration. Dark and dense without weight, and the tannins are already polished. Most Colgin I open needs another decade in the cellar. This one does not.

53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot. Dark and dense in the glass, with a perfume that arrives before the fruit does. Cassis and black cherry first, then graphite, crushed stone and sharpened pencil. Violets underneath. The palate is medium to full, layered rather than heavy, with plum, cocoa, licorice and a savory herb edge. Tannins are ample but already fine-grained, and the acidity keeps the middle honest. Twenty months in French oak reads as structure, not vanilla. It finishes long, mineral and clean.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Splendid aromas of plums, bark, earth, cedar and some light chocolate and wet earth undertones. It’s medium- to full-bodied, with creamy and very fine tannins giving it depth and length. A blend of vineyards, including Colgin Vineyards and Vine Hill. Gorgeous now. Drink or hold. ~97 James Suckling

This cuvée was first made in 2016 as a blend of mostly estate fruit (there's a splash of Vine Hill Ranch), made from the more accessible lots with the idea of a slightly more approachable style, yet crafted with the same care and technique as the Colgin flagships. Based on 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Petit Verdot from IX Estate, Tychson Hill, and Vine Hill Ranch aged 20 months in French oak, the 2021 Jubilation By Colgin shows a beautiful perfume of darker currants and cassis intermixed with freshly sharpened pencils, graphite, and crushed stone, as well as a beautiful violet and floral character. It's medium to full-bodied, with a concentrated, layered mouthfeel, ample tannins, good acidity, and a great finish. It's far from an entry-level, simple wine and is a serious, pure, gorgeous wine in its own right that will keep for two decades. Drink 2025-2045. ~96 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2021 Jubilation is gorgeous. Dark, ample and seductive, the 2021 captures all the textural intensity of this drought year and tiny berries. Black cherry, plum, espresso, licorice, menthol and dried herbs fill out the layers effortlessly. This dense, packed red will benefit from another year or two in bottle. ~93 Vinous
