About The Wine

Patrimony is a steal when you stack it against Napa's cult Cabernets like Opus One ($600+) or Hundred Acre ($1,000+)—it's not even close. In fact, in blind tastings, Patrimony has consistently ranked as people's top choice, while those big-name bottles finish last. This is Daniel Daou's masterwork, positioned as California's answer to a Bordeaux first-growth and named for "gift from the father"—the legacy he and Georges are leaving to their children. Every bottle is molded with "Legatum Nostrum" (Our Legacy). The inaugural 2013 vintage earned 98 points from Robert Parker, and every release since has cemented Patrimony's place among California's most collectible Cabernets.

The magic starts at 2,200 feet on DAOU Mountain in the Adelaida District, where ancient calcareous soils—the same chalk and limestone that define Bordeaux and Burgundy—produce Cabernet with extraordinary structure. But it's the barrel program that sets Patrimony apart: oak trees from Bordeaux, seasoned on the mountain, then sent to a custom cooper for Burgundy-style treatment—tight grain, long low toast. The result is what they call the "cashmere effect": silky, integrated tannins with zero harshness. Daniel Daou is vegan and makes his wines balanced and food-versatile from release—this shines with everything from truffle risotto to filet mignon.

Patrimony's leadership team brings together exceptional talent from Napa Valley's most prestigious wine estates. Estate Director Erik Johnson honed his expertise as Head Sommelier at The French Laundry, while the team is rounded out by talent from iconic producers including Opus One and Heitz Cellar, bringing decades of experience from the region's finest wineries to this ambitious Paso Robles project.

The 2021 Patrimony opens with rum-soaked cherries, wild roses, and redcurrants, layered with tobacco, lavender, and vanilla bean. It's elegant and silky with an almost molten chocolate texture—that signature "cashmere effect" in full display.

Crushed wild berries ride a core of vibrant acidity, framed by generous, powdery tannins that never turn harsh. The finish is long with lingering blackberries, mocha, and delicate floral notes. Wonderfully balanced and drinking beautifully now.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Dark-fruited and toasted aromas of wild blackberries, tobacco, seaweed and orange zest. The palate is full-bodied with finely integrated tannins and bright acidity. It shows notes of bramble berries, leather, graphite and roast meat. Wonderfully balanced and fresh. Drink or hold. ~96 James Suckling

The 2021 Patrimony Cabernet Sauvignon, made entirely with free-run juice, will be in 100% new French oak barrels for 30 months. It has an opaque ruby color and pure aromas of blueberry, black cherry, pencil shavings, violet, soy sauce and leather. Full-bodied and powerful, it has a concentrated core of dark fruit, refreshing acidity and a mineral-driven finish. ~95-97 Wine Advocate

A bouquet of rum-soaked cherries and roses is complicated by hints of tobacco, sweet spice and vanilla bean as the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Patrimony comes to life in the glass. It’s elegant and silky, with an almost molten chocolate mouthfeel. Oak-inflected crushed wild berries and cherries ride a core of vibrant acidity. A web of sweet tannins remains through the lightly structured yet long finale. A pleasantly bitter tinge of blackberries and mocha resonates... no fan of DAOU will want to miss it. ~95 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
