About The Wine

Force Majeure is Red Mountain royalty — a producer that's earned a cult following for Cabernets that rival the best of Napa at a fraction of the noise.

The estate sits on the southwest ridge of Red Mountain, where fourteen-year-old vines dig into deep loam laced with fractured basalt, concreted ash, and granite erratics left by the Missoula floods. The result: tiny, concentrated berries that pack serious power.

It's made by Todd Alexander, who came to Washington after running the cellar at cult Napa estate Bryant Family. He built it from 94% Cabernet with a splash of Merlot and Petit Verdot and raised it 22 months in mostly new French oak.

The result is full-bodied and serious — cassis, graphite, tobacco, crushed rock — with firm, fine-grained tannin that tells you this wine is built to last, not built to impress on day one.

My honest read: don't rush it. Give it a long decant tonight, or better, lay it down — Bargreen sees it drinking out to 2050. This is cellar Cabernet from one of the best sites in the Northwest. Buy it for the long game.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A stunning wine that has otherworldly potential. This is a bit backwards right now but you can see the potential in this head-turning Cabernet. Loaded with dense blackberry, huckleberry sandalwood and sagebrush notes, with Turkish coffee, this is a massive, brooding Cabernet Sauvignon that will satisfy for decades to come. Give this another year or two in the bottle and this is going to blow your mind. Drink 2025-2050. ~100 Owen Bargreen

Another instant classic from winemaker Todd Alexander and Force Majeure this one the 2021 Red Mountain Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. A perfect combination of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot that spent about 22 months in 75% new French oak barrels. Phenomenal notes of crushed boysenberries, cassis, sweet baking spices, cracked peppercorn, wet stones, dried desert mountain sagebrush, and wet earth give this astonishing bottle of Cab what it needs for perfection. It doesn’t sit on the palate, it glides across it with crunchy tannins that are firm yet giving. Give this wine another year or so in the bottle before enjoying and then cellar it for 15-20 years. A little over 600 cases produced. Highly recommended and editor’s choice. ~100 International Wine Report

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain Estate is a showstopper, opening with a mentholated freshness and mixing dried herbs, cedar shavings, black cherries and cloves. This impresses further with its poise and refinement, silken and pure, with crisp red berry fruits and tactile mineral tones. Rosy inner florals combine with autumnal spice and hints of licorice as the 2021 finishes long and tannic yet remarkably fresh. I would never guess this came from Red Mountain given how silky these tannins are. Wow. Todd Alexander is a master of his craft.~ 98 Vinous Media

Another gem, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain Estate offers up a textbook Red Mountain profile with loads of savory red and black fruits as well as loamy earth, graphite, and a Pauillac-like lead pencil character. Full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, like all great Cabernets from this terroir, the cellar is going to be your friend. Hide bottles for 4-5 years and enjoy over the following two decades.~97 Jeb Dunnuck

My core belief that no wine can be perfect is seriously challenged by this otherworldly Cabernet Sauvignon. The saline aroma of driftwood transitions to crushed raspberry, mineral and graphite scents. Flavors of black cherry compote and black tea are counterpointed by the bitter bite of nettles. Leathery tannins and jangly acidity are equally matched.~ 97 Wine Enthusast

Impressive for its richness and deep structure, this red screams Red Mountain, offering compelling blackberry, crushed rock and espresso tones that build tension toward firm tannins. Best from 2022 through 2031. 500 cases made. ~95 Wine Spectator

Red Mountain Cabernet has long been the stuff of triple-digit scores in Washington. This wine shows restraint that balances the power of those Red Mountain tannins. Black bramble fruits and crushed black stone open the aromatics, followed by dried violets, singed rose petals and bouquets of savoury herbs. Smoked cedar plank, Saigon cinnamon and redolent red and black currants offer a generous display across the palate. It's a dynamite wine that will need time to fully unwind. ~ 95 Decanter

What a fragrant and sophisticated cabernet. It’s full-bodied with firm, powdery tannins framing a concentrated core of bay leaves, thyme, olives and dark, spicy fruit. Long and structured. Cabernet sauvignon with some merlot and petit verdot. Try after 2025. ~ 95 James Suckling
