About The Wine

Force Majeure is Red Mountain royalty — a producer that's earned a cult following for Cabernets that rival the best of Napa at a fraction of the noise. The estate sits on the southwest ridge of Red Mountain, where fourteen-year-old vines dig into deep loam laced with fractured basalt, concreted ash, and granite erratics left by the Missoula floods. The result: tiny, concentrated berries that pack serious power.

Red Mountain Syrah is Washington's answer to the Northern Rhone — all iron and black fruit and stone, with the structure to age like the best of Cote-Rotie. This is 96% Cabernet Sauvignon with splashes of Merlot and Petit Verdot, fermented in concrete and stainless, then aged 22 months in 75% new French oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered — nothing between the vineyard and the glass.

The 2021 vintage was warm, giving the estate fruit full phenolic ripeness while holding the structure that makes Red Mountain Cabernet age like iron. What's in the bottle is a full-bodied, densely concentrated Cabernet with ripe tannins that taste like micro flavor bubbles melting through the finish. Owen Bargreen gave it a perfect 99 and said it "flirts with perfection and is arguably the finest Red Mountain Syrah I have tasted." Wine Spectator put it at #60 in their Top 100 Wines of 2021.

Dense blackberry, huckleberry, sandalwood, and sagebrush, with Turkish coffee and cassis. Graphite, chalky minerality, and tobacco. Full-bodied, with concentrated mid-palate, ripe tannins, and a finish that won't quit. This is the kind of wine that makes you forget what state you're in — and wonder why you've been paying Napa prices.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This 2021 Red Mountain Syrah comes from 11 acre hillside set on fractured basalt that is tightly spaced. The wine was given 15% whole cluster fermentation and has a touch of Viognier blended in. The palate is soft and seamless with serious verve and concentration. Weightless and loaded with dense black and blue fruit flavors, with creme de violette, Turkish coffee accents, this is quite simply the finest Syrah you will find on Red Mountain. What a stunner! Drink 2024-2040. ~99 Owen Bargreen

More Hermitage-like with its concentration and structure, the 2021 Syrah Red Mountain Estate boasts a vivid ruby hue as well as powerful aromatics of crème de cassis, crushed stone, new leather, and graphite. With classic Red Mountain minerality, full-bodied richness, lots of tannins, and a great finish, hide this beauty in the cellar for 4-5 years if you can. It's going to see its 20th birthday in fine form.~ 97 Jeb Dunnuck

A Syrah that shows depth and concentration, balancing the power of Washington's hottest appellation with elegance and florality, is pure Syrah (with a 2% Viognier co-ferment, of course): smoky violets and exotic notes of dark chocolate envelope dark bramble fruits and briny saline clarity. The use of concrete in this wine allows it to have a purity of fruit and site that is second to none—rich notes of baking chocolate and tart blackberries with muddled mint leaf flavours. Finesse meets power, where crushed stone minerality comes together with dried desert garrigue and dark smoked sea salt. ~ 97 Decanter

Black raspberries combine with mentholated herbs and dark chocolate as the 2021 Syrah Red Mountain Estate blossoms in the glass. This is round and supple with fresh acidity and racy red and black fruits, all underscored by tactile minerals and hints of clove. It's powerful and youthfully tense, with a core of fine tannins and a tart wild berry concentration that lingers on. The tannin management here is exceptional. ~ 96 Vinous Media

Berries blue and boysen join with the yeasty scent of freshly baked sourdough in a joyous aromatic aroma union. On the silky-textured palate, a chocolate similar to a Tootsie Roll is matched by ripe blackcap raspberries and the saline quality of a salted plum. Bright acidity is an equal match for fine-grained tannins. ~ 95 Wine Enthusiast

This is a dense and fragrant Syrah showing star anise, blueberries, mulberries, sweet chiles and paprika. It’s compact and full-bodied, with firm yet very fine tannins. Broad mouthfeel, slightly chewy, with so much texture. Co-fermented with 1% to 2% viognier. About 15% whole cluster. Drink from 2025. ~94 James Suckling
