About The Wine

Todd Alexander has made some of Washington's most celebrated wines — Force Majeure, WeatherEye, Holocene.

From the Sky Down is his latest statement, and it may be his boldest yet. His partner here is Bryan Otis, the proprietor behind Matthews — one of Washington's oldest wine brands, established in 1993, with a long-standing focus on world-class Cabernet Sauvignon from the finest vineyard sites in the state.

Together, they turned their focus to a single mission: find Washington's greatest Cabernet sites and let them speak for themselves.

The debut release does exactly that — three single-vineyard Cabernets from the 2021 vintage, each sourced from a different corner of the Columbia Valley: Heart of the Hill on Red Mountain, Conner Lee in the Columbia Valley, and Solaksen in the Royal Slope. Each wine is a distinct expression of its terroir, crafted with Alexander's signature precision — exceptional depth, balance, and purity in every glass. Already being called some of the finest Cabernets Washington has ever produced, From the Sky Down isn't just a new label. It's a new benchmark for what this state is capable of.

The Conner Lee bottling draws from one of Washington's most storied vineyard sites. Established in 1980 with the guidance of legendary viticulturist Dr. Walter Clore — the founding father of Washington's wine industry — Conner Lee sits on the Wahluke Slope AVA at approximately 1,100 feet elevation. Sandy glacial soils deposited by the cataclysmic Missoula Floods give the site its characteristic drainage and mineral tension. The vines used for this wine were planted in 1987 and 1992, and the vineyard is sustainably farmed. Todd Alexander blended 95% Cabernet Sauvignon with 5% Merlot for texture and complexity, yielding just 500 cases of a wine that critics across the board have placed among the finest to emerge from this historic site.

Eye: Deep ruby-purple core with a vivid neon-purple rim.

Nose: Layers of dark fruit open first — kirsch cordial, crème de cassis, ripe boysenberry — followed by more complex secondary notes of powdered graphite, dried rose petals, dusty earth, sagebrush, spring flowers, and hints of new leather and sweet pipe tobacco.

Palate: Seductively smooth and supple, with ripe red and blue fruits lifted by sweet spice and vibrant acidity. Violet pastille and cocoa play off fine, refined tannins, while notes of dark cherry, balsamic spice, and subtle minerality extend into a dramatically long finish. Classically structured yet remarkably fresh.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Coming from plantings from 1987 and 1992 plantings, with 5% Merlot added, the 2021 From The Sky Down ‘Connor Lee Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon offers rich kirsch cordial and creme de cassis notes alongside sagebrush and sweet pipe tobacco notes on the nose. The palate is soft and plush with a refined texture and serious sense of weight. Salty soils, ultra-refined tannins and a lengthy finish complete this beautiful wine that is drinking marvelously right now. Drink 2024-2040. ~ 99 Owen Bargreen

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Conner Lee Vineyard opens with balsamic spice and dark chocolate, giving way to mentholated herbs and dried black cherries. Seductively smooth and supple, it impresses with ripe red and blue fruits accentuated by sweet spice. Violet pastille and hints of cocoa resonate over fine tannins as the 2021 tapers off with dramatic length. Classically structured yet remarkably fresh, this possesses a seductive appeal that collectors will find hard to ignore. ~ 97 Vinous Media

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Conner Lee Vineyard sports a deep ruby/purple hue as well as a great perfume of red and blue fruits, sappy herbs, spring flowers, and a kiss of graphite. With lots of varietal character, medium to full body, fine tannins, and a terrific sense of freshness and purity, it’s a seriously good Cabernet in the making that’s up with the crème de la crème. 500 cases. ~ 95-97 Jeb Dunnuck

The exciting new joint venture between Matthews owner Bryan Otis and winemaker extraordinaire Todd Alexander is off to a banging start. The aromas of seared steak and boysenberry compote are joined by wisps of espresso and thyme. Fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity support flavors of black cherry, orange zest and cedar. Enjoy this seamless beauty from now to 2039. ~ 96 Wine Enthusiast

From Cabernet vines planted in the Wahluke Slope site in the late 1980s, this vineyard has come to be known as one of Washington's finest. Likely a clone 8 Cabernet selection, winemaker Todd Alexander uses 70% new oak to build the mouthfeel of this wine. It's a wonderful Cabernet, generously aromatic with notes of violets, crushed pencil lead and fresh red berries. It offers an undeniable elegance. The palate clings to a savoury core of bay leaf and dried lavender with showy red fruits, hints of bright blood orange, and exotic spices. Delicious and layered. From the Sky Down is a collaboration between winemaker Todd Alexander and Bryan Otis. ~ 96 Decanter

The inaugural vintage of this wine shows aromas of black raspberries, mulberries, tea leaves and black olives. It’s full-bodied but elegant, with fine-grained tannins. Mineral undertone. Some fruit from 1989 cabernet sauvignon vines. Drink or hold. ~ 93 James Suckling
