About The Wine

Todd Alexander has made some of Washington's most celebrated wines — Force Majeure, WeatherEye, Holocene.

From the Sky Down is his latest statement, and it may be his boldest yet. His partner here is Bryan Otis, the proprietor behind Matthews — one of Washington's oldest wine brands, established in 1993, with a long-standing focus on world-class Cabernet Sauvignon from the finest vineyard sites in the state.

From The Sky Down is a focused exploration of single-vineyard Washington Cabernet Sauvignon — three debut releases from the 2021 vintage, each from a brilliant site. This bottle, Heart of the Hill, comes from a single block (Clone 2) on Red Mountain, a region known for its classic minerality, gravelly soils, and tightly structured fruit.

The wine spent 22 months in 75% new French oak. What emerged is a 14.9% alcohol Cabernet with a darker fruit and incense profile, a tightly packed core of hedonistic intensity, and the kind of balance that lets serious power move gracefully.

Turkish coffee and Asian spices mark the nose alongside black tea, blackberry compote, and violet rose petals. The palate is intense, very dense, refined in texture, with serious verve and terrific tannins.

Eye: Dense, inky ruby-purple, opaque at the center with a vivid rim.

Nose: Explosive and layered — blackberry compote, dark plum, and black cherry anchored by Turkish coffee, Asian spices, incense, sweet pipe tobacco, and violet rose petals. Classic Red Mountain gravelly earth and minerality rise beneath, adding structural gravitas.

Palate: Full-bodied and concentrated with a thick, textured mouthfeel. Blackberry, orange zest, clove, and espresso unfold over fine-grained tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish. Sweet pea flowers and anise provide aromatic lift, while the tightly packed core builds toward a mouth-coating finish that critics describe as fading slowly — like the last notes of a symphony.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The outstanding 2021 From The Sky Down ‘Heart of The Hill’ Cabernet Sauvignon comes from this brilliant site on Red Mountain. This wine comes from a single block in the vineyard (Clone 2) as this was stored in 75% new French oak before bottling. Turkish coffee  and Asian spices mark the nose alongside black tea, blackberry compote and violet rose petals. The heady aromatics bring you back to the glass for more enjoyment. The palate is intense and very dense with refined texture and serious verve. A total stunner, this is going to be a head-turning wine for decades to come. Drink 2024-2045 ~99 Owen Bargreen

The wine opens up with a decadent combination of blackberry pie, loamy soil, sweet pea flowers and espresso shots laced with anise. The wine's full, thick texture complements its blackberry, orange zest, clove and pipe tobacco flavors, all of which are backed by fine-grained tannins. ~98 Wine Enthusiast

Ripe fruits and spice are the markers of this Cabernet, and they have an intensity that is the signature of Red Mountain. From Kiona's iconic Heart of the Hill Vineyard, it offers ripe blackberries that border on jammy in their redolence. Crushed violets and lavender brighten the aromatics, which finish with a spiced mineral tone. The palate is dense, mouthcoating black fruits, hints of pepper, fig jam, and Christmas spices. This new brand is a collaboration between winemaker Todd Alexander and Bryan Otis. ~ 95 Decanter

I like the lavender, dried herb and spice character to this. Ripe black cherry and blackcurrant fruit. Broad, muscular and full-bodied, with deep and spicy layers and firm, sturdy tannins. Try from 2026. ~ 94 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

From The Sky Down

From the Sky Down is a family-owned Washington project born from a deep fascination with exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and the elite vineyard sites of the Columbia Valley AVA.
