About The Wine

Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon from the Royal Slope AVA — high-elevation Columbia Valley fruit grown atop the Frenchman Hills, where cool nights and southwest-facing slopes deliver the kind of tension and structure collectors usually chase in Bordeaux.

From the Sky Down is a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon project born from the collaboration of Bryan Otis — proprietor of Avallé, the parent company behind Matthews Winery and several other acclaimed Washington labels — and winemaker Todd Alexander, whose career spans Bryant Family Vineyard in Napa, Force Majeure in Washington, and his own label Holocene in the Willamette Valley.

The name signals the project's core philosophy: every element from the sky down — climate, geology, topography, vintage — shapes what arrives in the bottle. The inaugural 2021 release comprises three single-vineyard Cabernets from elite Columbia Valley sites, each a distinct study in Washington terroir.

The Solaksen bottling comes from the Royal Slope AVA, situated atop the Frenchman Hills within the larger Lawrence Vineyards property. "Solaksen" is a Norwegian-inspired term meaning "off axis to the sun," a reference to the vineyard's distinctive row orientation — vines are planted at an unusually tight 7' by 3' spacing in an off-axis configuration. This southwest-facing slope sits at the cooler end of the Royal Slope's elevation range, a deliberate advantage for preserving freshness and structural finesse. The wine is produced entirely from Clone 337 Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from Block 5 of the vineyard — a Bordeaux-pedigreed clone more commonly associated with Napa Valley's most celebrated estates.

Unblended and unapologetic at 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, this 650-case wine wears its structure proudly while delivering a complexity that critics have described as evoking old-school northern Napa Valley in its prime.

Eye: Deep ruby-purple, dense and concentrated in the glass.

Nose: Boldly aromatic, with classic Bordeaux-leaning character: cassis, dark plum, brambly black fruit, and smoked tobacco lead, followed by lead pencil, cedary herbs, anise, walnut, and layers of exotic spice. Umami and dried herb notes add savory depth.

Palate: Full-bodied and built for the long haul, yet showing remarkable balance between mouthwatering acidity and fine-grained tannins. Dark fruit concentration anchors the palate, with blackberry, orange zest, and bay leaf layering over a core of earthy graphite and espresso. The finish is long and textured, with pliable, round tannins that carry the wine toward a broad horizon.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This beautiful wine comes from Block 5 in the vineyard, with mainly Clone 337 Cabernet Sauvignon which is the most widely planted clone in the Napa Valley. Once on the nose this shows walnut tones on the nose alongside cassis, anise and exotic spices. There is a brilliant fruit spectrum on the palate, ranging from red to dark fruit alongside espresso grounds, graphite and scorched earthy tones. Drink 2024-2040 ~97 Owen Bargreen

This powerful Cabernet Sauvignon flexes its muscles and tannins, almost daring you to drink it anytime soon. Its black fruit aromas are complemented by a smoky-meaty quality suggestive of thick slabs of back bacon. Blackberry, orange zest, Cuban coffee, pulled pork and bay leaf flavors coat the palate. Elevated acidity and grippy tannins suggest enjoying this wine from 2025–2040. ~ 97 Wine Enthusiast

A wine of staggering complexity. From the Sky Down's Solaksen Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a southwest-facing slope in Royal Slope's Lawrence Vineyards. A single clone, 337 Cabernet, balances depth and finesse beautifully. Notes of coffee bean and eucalyptus desiccated violets stand upright from the glass. The palate is complex, layered and savoury in its core. Bay leaf and streaks of graphite arrest notes of dessert scrub, dried lavender and a core of red and blue fruits. This 100% Cabernet dances between medium and full-bodied, savoury and fruit. It's a stunning wine for this nascent brand, a collaboration between winemaker Todd Alexander and Bryan Otis. ~ 97 Decanter

Coming from the Royal Slope and mostly Clone 337, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Solaksen Vineyard has a Bordeaux-like vibe in its red and black fruits as well as smoked tobacco, lead pencil, and cedary herb-laced aromas and flavors. It’s another medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced 2021 that has plenty of richness as well as freshness. ~95-97 Jeb Dunnuck

Blackcurrants, blackberry fruit, bay leaves and hints of spearmint on the nose. Deep and sophisticated with a full body and a fine tannic frame. Nicely restrained. Try from 2025. ~ 94 James Suckling
