About the Wine
Welcome to Kangarilla Road Winery, known simply as the label with the leaf. That leaf is not a decoration. It’s a statement. Each variety carries its own leaf shape, a quiet promise that what’s inside the bottle stays true to the grape and to place.
The 2021 Kangarilla Road Shiraz comes from McLaren Vale, one of Australia’s most generous and expressive regions for the variety. The winery sits on Kangarilla Road itself, purchased in 1997 by winemakers Kevin and Helen O’Brien. The name stuck, as did the philosophy. Make wines with integrity, restraint, and approachability. No tricks. No excess.
Kevin O’Brien, a Roseworthy graduate since 1982, crafts wines with a steady hand and deep respect for varietal character. The style here leans elegant rather than heavy, letting McLaren Vale’s natural richness show without overpowering the wine. Smooth texture, balance, and consistency define the range.
While not certified organic, the vineyards are farmed using organic practices and Kangarilla Road is a member of Sustainable Winegrowers of Australia. Sustainability is not a marketing angle here. It’s simply how the vineyards have always been cared for.
This Shiraz reflects everything Kangarilla Road stands for. Honest fruit. Regional generosity. A restrained, polished style that makes the wine easy to enjoy now and satisfying to return to again.
Fermented in traditional open fermenters with heading board systems and in static open fermenters using gentle cap management techniques. Oak maturation is 16 months in 25% new French and American hogsheads, the balance aged in 1 to 4-year-old barrels.
ABV: 14%
Tasting Notes
100% Shiraz.
This Shiraz pours a deep garnet color. The nose is bold and savory, opening with blackberry and black cherry layered with leather, peppered bacon, and a floral hint of violets. On the palate, the wine is lively and bone-dry with a medium-to-full body.
Dark fruit flavors return alongside smoky barbecue notes, beef jerky, black pepper, and a touch of cinnamon spice. Tannins are grippy and chewy, giving the wine structure and length, while savory herbs and earthy undertones balance the ripe red and black fruit. A natural match for the grill.
